No reason to lie or hide anything from you... I was in 6th doing about 40 mph then I heard a big boom and then my rear wheels locked up and then the jeep was thrown out of gear.. i got out and motor oil was pouring out on the road. I took it to Jeep and they told me "water in the motor isnt covered" so i got on the phone with the insurance company they sent the adjuster and an engineer out to look at it. the shop took the motor apart and it was decided that the water came in through the air intake box. the insurance company claimed it as a road hazard. as for the mud yeah theres gonna be some, i live in the middle of wisconsin and my buddy got his truck stuck in a corn field. as far as water goes.. i used to work at a shop (Park Automotive Repair) and i have seen what water does to motors so as far as that goes my jeep stays out of the pool. I came here for help so im going to tell you the entire story. As far as a poor design for the intake goes.. if you compare it to a TJ intake it is a world of difference. the TJ has a tapered tube that flares out at the end to help prevent water entering the box with the JK its like its incomplete and there is a large opening that is unprotected.. Dont get me wrong I love my JK and am not knocking it by any means.. The Jeep is my DD that I cant afford to tear it apart and break things day to day. without it i cant get to work, without work i cant make payments.

Totally agree on the design of the jk airbox. Tj is waayyy better. The jk one is in the worst possible spot imaginasble . Water from the serpentine belt gets thrown directly into it aswell.

And to add, I have an airaid that I modified the splash shields and also added to. Less water gets on it than a stock airbox.

appreciate the more in depth from you. i dont have anything to compare the intake to as this is my first jeep. does anyone know if the 07 intake is diferent from 09 intake. im trying to understand this because you got me curious now. that would have to be alot of water getting in there and it would be design flaw from Jeep. i look at my intake and i just dont see what the problem is. i have driven this jeep through 2 hurricanes and not a single problem with rain water.

would you mind posting some pics of the intake so i can see if there are diferences. as far as the CAI, its my understanding they are crap wh4en it comes to water, but i swear i saw some setup that was boxed in.

Here are the two pictures the TJ and the JK.. its hard to see on the JK but the large opening sits right where the hood meets the body and its fairly close and WIDE open.

thanks for the pics, yea we have the same intake. if im seeing it corectly, why yall are saying the jk box sucks is with the opening right there at the hood, i could see how water could get in between the hood and body. besides that i dont see anythiong else wrong with it.
