I have an ATK 5.0L in my 62 Falcon. Got about 5,000 miles on it with no problems.

OP is correct, the older JK engines are flawed in many ways besides just the oil consumption. my 2007 JKU engine was replaced at 35xxx - just outside of warranty. Jeep dealer replaced with Jasper engine, the Jasper rep was on hand during install with me to be sure done right. 75K later, I think they are a good alternative to a remanufactured 3.8. But, the timing cover just went out which was a known TSB problem in the early JKs, and so again, I have an expensive repair and well outside Jasper's 3 year/100K warranty. But, I don't fault Jasper, the timing covers Mopar engineered early on were porous and terrible parts.

They may have had a few bad ones but they are certainly not flawed. This is a 25 year design that that has been known to last 100 of thousands of miles ... come back in 20 years and tell me how that 3.6 is doing.. oh wait it's already done. Now they have a new 3.6 hmmmm.
As I said, we have an 07, 08, and 09 allhave well over 100,000klm and the 08 has 270,000klm with no issues.

... The 3.6 actually has a higher % of failure

the 3.6 might not be the best motor on the market today but its hands down better in every category then the 3.8 it replaced.

Lol Then you evidently haven't spent any time with a regeared 3.8. The 3.6 will not do anything the 3.8 can't. Most seat of the pants Performance issues are transmission related and not motor related.

I will not claim the 3.8 to be better than the 3.6, but I personally do like the 3.8. It's easy to work on, has a good amount of low end torque, and has been rather dependable for me. I have 157,000 miles on mine with no major issues. I have just been trying to think of options ahead of time for when I need to replace it. As I said before, I'll probably just replace with another reman 3.8.

owned a 2009 rubicon before this 3.6 willy. Have you owned both? Also owned 2 4.0 jeeps which I also feel was a better motor. Like I said the 3.6 is better in every catagory. Had a 2.5 tj too. Its still sitting in the garage. My granddaughter will get it this fall when she turns 16. It too would go any place the new one will. Doesnt make it as good of a day to day motor. Sure you can change gearing but that's about allways a compromise between power, gas milage and longevity. lets see. More hp more torque, better fuel economy, lighter and has a much better rep when it comes to using oil. Now tell me in which category the 3.8 is superior to the 3.6!
