Jeep Re-Gear
Im trying to get some information on the re-gear of my 2012 Jeep JKU. Its a 6 seed manual with 3:21 gears. It has the dana 30 front and dana 44 rear axles. I ran across a deal on a G2 re gear kit to take it to 4:56. The question that i have is do i need a new carrier to install it. Also if so, does it require a new carrier for the front and the rear? If it does require a carrier what carrier would you use? I appreciate all the info i can get on this matter. Thanks for all the help.
Who's doing the install? You doing it yourself?
If not, I would buy through the shop doing it for you. They get better deals than we do, will usually cut you a deal on the total, and you won't have to worry about any missing parts. The shop that did my gears (Yukon 4:56) got the parts for $200 less than it would have cost me to buy them from Northridge/online.

Oh boy, here we go....
Yes, you need a new carrier as the factory carrier for the 3.21 gearing will not work with your new selection. The additional cost for a new carrier should be marginal, but the real question is do you think you'd benefit from just slapping a truetrac or similar LSD in there instead. That would run you more than a carrier, less than a full on locker, but the benefits would be nice.
As Bora Bora highlights, if a shop is doing the work, it is usually best to let them order everything needed. The end cost to you is usually no more than if you bought parts and took it to someone, then paid labor.

Here is a D30 carrier. $75

And this is the limited slip that resharp was referring to. (you would buy this instead of the open carrier...) Great traction device for the non-hardcore crawler crowd. Prices seem to have gone up, they were $385 not that long ago.

And to add to this, shops are much more likely to work with you on repair/warrany issues if they supply the parts.

Just for the D30. The rear D44 carrier is fine for any JK gear ratio.

I've wheeled with few folks with that up front and was pretty surprised how they performed. Some things I thought they might struggle on compared to a traditional locker....and the jeeps just went right on through it. Made me bit of a believer.....and def 5000X better than fully open diff. Definitely plenty of bang for your buck, and would make the axle bit more attractive when selling it in the future.
