Default K&N Filter - Stock Housing

If anyone is interested, K&N just came out with an air filter for the stock airbox. The part number is 33-2364 and it is about $50.

I have one on my 4x4 pickup and it has been on it for years and years. It's great. I'm going to put one on my JK as well, when I get around to it that is.

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what benefit is this if it fits in the stock airbox. Isn't the point of a CAI to let in more air?

Not stupid. It IS supposed to allow more air through, plus it can be cleaned and re-used, no need to replace, and it is supposed to filter better than paper filters...these are the benefits I have heard of...ran one on my TJ for many years...

That was slightly a stupid question. This is the purpose of the filter:

* High Air Flow with Excellent Filtration
* Designed to Increase Horsepower and Acceleration
* Washable and Reusable
* Will NOT Void Vehicle Warranty
* Lasts up to 50,000 miles before cleaning is required depending on driving conditions
* K&N Million Mile Limited Warranty®
* Emissions Legal in all 50 US States.
* Economical, a K&N Air Filter Will Last the Life of Your Automobile, Motorcycle, or ATV
* Works with Original Equipment Manufacturer Vehicle Electronics
* Easy High Performance Add-on
* Environmentally Friendly

Basically, a CAI brings in colder, more dense air. Most of the CAI for Jeeps are not true "cold air" because it brings in the air from the engine compartment. Some have a heat shield, but still get air that goes through the radiator. True CAI's bring air from under the radiator. Since Jeeps like to go swimming, a "true" CAI would be useless. The K&N filter has much less restriction than a stock filter, which in turn, give you more horsepower over stock. Since this air filter is installed in the factory airbox, you may not get the extra 1-3 horserpower that you would get from the other aftermarket filters beacuse of the restriction of the box, but it costs less.

They are definately worth putting in (IMO) if your not going to run a CAI. I run them in all my vehicles. For about $60 (filter and cleaner kit) it's the last filter you'll ever buy. Depending on your driving conditions, you can run a year or two before they even need cleaning. I just visually check them every other oil change, and clean as needed. I also noticed a very small increase in mpg on my TJ and my wife's Envoy after I dropped the K&N filters in. I'm talking < 1mpg, but hey, at todays gas prices, it all adds up.

I ran a FIPK on my '01 Powerstroke and was very happy with it. I'm waiting until they make one for the JK and them I'll drop down the bucks. The last one I bought cost around $200.

I ordered the drop in and it will be here monday. I have always used either their drop in filter or CAI and have been happy with them. The reason that I got the drop in for the jeep is that I have seen too many hydrolocked vehicles here in Florida, and am waiting to see what ARB does for a snorkel. Plus I didn't have the extra cash for the CAI. I am also going to try and find something to make a smooth intake tube out of.
