KM2's in the snow
so i read a whole bunch of threads about km2 in the snow, and i hear some say they are terrible and others say they are ok - im so confused. so i figure that a vote should settle it.
and if you can tell why you voted the way you did
and if you can tell why you voted the way you did
On-road depths they are good. Off-road depths there are better choices. But, if you can deflate them to 8-5 PSI they do well. Obviously, the low pressure is for trail use only and time consuming. I live in a place with 4 seasons and run them year round. Other people use snow tires in the winter. The KM2s come pretty close to an all-purpose tire in my book.
Tire Rack has a survey where they rate tires on various types of surfaces including snow and ice. KM2's rate 9.2 on deep snow, 8.8 on light snow and 7.0 on ice traction. Comparing to DuraTrac's that are purpose-built snow tires, the DT has 9.3 light and deep snow rating and an 8.1 ice rating.
To answer your question, it depends on the type of surface you will be driving on. If it's ice, the KM2's will be less than ideal unless you use chains. If it's deep snow you will be performing close to the same as someone that has snow-rated tires.

Awesome pic! After seeing that, I'm glad I got the DuraTrac's. I've been in snow deeper than that and truck out of it without a problem. The Blizzard we had in Chicago a few weeks back had over 1000 cars stranded on Lakeshore drive. I drove around them in the grass without a problem. Thanks for the update. Looks like the Tire Rack survey may not be accurate.
HG07,
A picture's worth a thousand words. Thanks for posting.
My God, that's just terrible. To put things in perspective, I routinely use my '07 JKU which still has its original GY Wrangler 255s with 60,000 to make laps in the fields behind the house when the snow gets deep. We use the tire tracks as a cross-country ski course.
