Default Locker decisions

Hello all,

I am getting a regear soon to 5.13s finally so I have been looking at lockers. I know everyone is probably going to tell me to search, but I am gonna go over my situation, and see what you guys think. I deal with bad winters here, so a front auto locker seems out of the question but I cant afford selectables right now. I am thinking about getting a detroit in the rear and calling it good for now, is my thinking good here?? this is my DD, and around here wheeling is 2+ hours away so I really only wheel spring/summer maybe 5-10 times and its trails and mud mostly. Will the rear detroit be worth it to add? also I have a D30 up front, so it seems adding lockers would be kind of a waste because it will cause my D30 to fail sooner. I am planning on going to 37's when my 35's die. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks

Mike

TrueTracs front and back, or save for selectables.

Everybody I have talked to ended up replacing their (detroit, ox, aussie) lockers with ARBs.

Thanks for the input once again, I will moving (PCS) to probably the west coast in a year and a half so I wont be dealing with winters anymore. I have read good things about true tracs, but also have read they just aren't as good as a full locker and they are the same price of the detroits!

Truetracs are not as good as a Detroit for 'wheels in the air' crawling. A tap on the brakes will lock them up, but a full locker will perform better in that instance. (You indicated a few forest trails and some mud?). So for the 99.9% of your driving time that isn't heavy rocks, a TT would perform just fine, and on the slick stuff, a huge amount better.

Upper east coast, as your first post indicated, I vote for the TT.
California, with an occasional snow trip, a detroit would be fine.

My personal opinion is that I would not put a lunchbox/detroit or a selectable in a front d30, (due to strength issues), and would not run an auto locker, in either end, anyplace that sees slick winters. (a lot of people will disagree with this, just my personal opinion from driving with front/rear detroits back and forth to the ski areas.)

Warrantied up to 38" tires.

A few more pro's for the TT:

It is full case, and is much stronger than a cheap lunchbox that goes inside the stock case.
It uses helical gears, instead of clutches, so it will not wear out like other LS's.
Didn't check prices on the rear, but the front can be had for $375 or so, which beats the hell out of a thousand dollar selectable setup.

But again, if you know you are going out to Cali and won't need to worry about winter driving, a Detroit in the rear would be great. Then you just need to figure out if you trust your front 30 enough to put a detroit up there.

thanks for the info, still on the fence on what to do! any more insight? i am considering just throwing a aussie/lockright in the front and just calling it good just based on my wheeling habits and just being careful in the snow.
