I found I was better off not drilling small pilot holes but just drilling with the required drill bit right off the bat. I bought a couple cobalt bits and found they drilled easier without pilot holes.

I rarely use a regular drill bit. Either a step bit or an annular cutter. Otherwise, buy a dremel so you can ream the holes after stuff doesn't line up.

good point, I had to enlarge on bracket hole as I was off a smidge and that is all takes with the tapped holes.

I've had these for about 3 years on my 2 door. I can't remove the outer plate! I wish I could! I want to paint it yellow. I may just go to town with tape and do it on the jeep.

I'm dreading taking these off some day to re-powder coat. Worried I'm going to snap a bolt of strip something! I didn't have any idea what anti seize was when I installed them.

This is what i used to install mine. The VKS sliders provide 3/8x16 self tappers. X2 on the step bits (harbor freight). VKS recommended 21/64 for the self tappers which i used after the 5/16 step bit. I also used a spring loaded punch so the bit doesn't wander. The 6" extension and bit/drills were used to drill the upper holes.
Overall with the right tools it was a easy job. Everything lined up perfectly too... <--- which never happens LOL
