Which LSD / Locker for sand dunes ONLY driving ?
Hi guys
I realise this has been discussed many times. My twist to the question is: I only drive on sand dunes...... Here in Dubai, we have no rocks, no bush, no mud..... Nothing except big, soft, sandy, dry, dunes!!!!
I have a 2012 Wrangler Sport with 2.5" Teraflex lift and 33x12.5x15 BFG A/T tyres.
I have disables the ESP to be able to drive sideways up/down the dunes..... So have lost BLD.
I am thinking of changing the diff gearing and am considering a LSD or locker while it is being done.
The Eaton Truetrac seems highly recommended by some, but shot down by others. Considering I will never be rock crawling, Is an electric or air locker really necessary?
Any comments?
The car is used 75% on the dunes and 25% doing short trips as a 2nd car.
Regards
Paul

TrueTracs are very popular 'with people that have actually used them'! A quick search will bring up plenty of threads with a ton of feedback.
But, it is a limited slip made by Eaton/Detroit. It is full case, like the detroit locker, and is a very strong unit. It uses gears, not clutches, so it will not wear out like any of the clutch driven units on the market (ex, the factory limited slip, the ected, etc). It has a higher bias than other limiteds, so it performs better offroad. Not 'locker' performance, though, so there are better options available for those who like to play in the rocks, but a whole lot better than having an open diff. They are much more user friendly with winter weather than a locker. (won't matter to you over there in the sand, but there is a night and day difference on slick roads between a truetrac and a detroit locker. A front locker can be down right scary on ice.
) You can get both a front d30 and a rear d44 truetrac for about the same price as a single ARB, (just the arb locker, not including the air source).
If you don't want to pay for selectables, a pair of truetracs are a great combo. And a truetrac front with a detroit rear is another great combo to consider. Just depends on wants/needs/budget.

Hi nthinuf
'If you don't want to pay for selectables, a pair of truetracs are a great combo. And a truetrac front with a detroit rear is another great combo to consider. Just depends on wants/needs/budget.'
I assume you are referring to the detroit e-locker for the rear?
It is not that i don't want to pay for selectable, just from what i understand, if i had selectable both front and back. I would leave them 'off' until i get stuck in the sand then try 'selecting' them and try drive out. So up until i get stuck, i am exactly the same as now... 2x open diffs.
If i had a LSD combo, being 'auto'.... i would possibly not get stuck. If i did, i have friends and a snatch rope.....
All just a little confusing.
