Mileage drop with bumper
Increasing the weight of your JK decreases gas mileage. I doubt that 150 lbs of bumper and winch will cost you a full 2 mpg, but every increase costs you something. Obviously, your gas mileage is an issue for you and your wallet to sort out. Fair enough, but IMO, Jeepers are far too cavalier about the penalties that extra vehicle weight imposes on handling, stopping, and drive train/suspension durability. Nowhere is this more true than bigger tires (drive train durability) and bumpers (handling and stopping). Bumpers are cantilevered weight. They put extra strain on your springs, shocks, and every other part of your suspension system. Does this mean I think people shouldn't buy aftermarket bumpers? Of course not. I have bought them and will continue to do so.
I only mean to say that every decision involves trade-offs, and that we are sometimes blind to them. I actually think it's a big damn deal if one bumper weighs 60 lbs less than another. Assuming they both provide an equal amount of protection, I would always go with the lighter bumper, no matter how badass the heavier one looks. For instance, the Warn bumper looks great, but it weighs 155 freakin' pounds.
Add a decent winch and you've got the equivalent of a 250 lb fat guy hanging off the front of your Jeep. Trust me: your suspension components feel it, and it has an effect on how your Jeep performs.
Man, I've wandered pretty far off the Reservation here, haven't I? Rant off.
