Get rid of the crush cans if you get the bumper and put on D rings

I live in Maine, plenty of mud in the spring, rocks in the summer and salt in the winter. The powdercoat on my bumper is fantastic. I wrestled between the Mopar and the Shrockworks bumper. I chose the Mopar because it was lighter (still heavy duty) and because the Mopar bumper claims to retain the safety of the crush cans, an engineered feature of the stock bumper. Rather the crush cans are needed or not for air bag deployment is a subject for debate, but I figured the Mopar engeniers put them in the bumper for a reason. ARB is the only other manufacturer that I found willing to put in writing that their bumper was "air bag safe".
I agree. I think Mopar puts more engineering and testing into the bumpers than most vendors and want to make sure it works.

What did you use to mount on the bumper to hold the D rings? I too have the same mopar bumper and have seen your setup, but I wasnt sure how it was done.

Get the PURE JEEP D rings, they take the place of the plastic caps and metal crush cans underneath. You will have to cut off the cans, and the PURE JEEP's bolt right up.
I'd imagine the Rugged Ridge one's might as well, but never tried it, but I know 100% the Pure Jeep one's work well, and look better too.

Cool, thanks for the info. Yet one more thing to add to the growing list of mods

The weight is particularly important if you don't want significant additional rake.

Did you check with AEV regarding the air bags?

I forgot to check AEV. I didn't like the mesh section on the bumper, it looked like it would be a pain to clean mud from. I bet they are air bag approved as well. AEV exceeds OEM standards and is a great company.

Man there are some SHARP Jeeps in this thread! I'm looking into the Mopar and the modular bumper. The modular bumper with a stinger or pre-runner bar is EXPEN$IVE!!! That's the only drawback I see with it.
Decisions decisions...

Oh yeah. I see some discussion about the crush cans and the air bags. From what I've read, the airbags aren't controlled by anything in the bumpers, rather they are controlled by accelerometers in one of the front corners of the Jeep. Am I missing something here?

Swanny297 lives in Shreveport & has the Rugged Ridge modular bumper installed if you want to see it in person.

You are correct, the crush cans have nothing to do with the airbags. They are just a couple of thin metal cans to absorb a little bit of a bump, assuming you hit a nice flat object exactly at that location.

I think I may have to look him up. I'd like to see it up close and personal before I go off and make a hasty decision to buy the Mopar bumper.
