Default MPG's wth Rack Vs Trailer

I have been geeting really great mpgs around town, even on a recent road trip (around 21) My question is though, on my next trip I will not have enough room inside for all the gear. I am looking to either a rack with a basket - or a small trailer.

Leaning toward the rack for pure storage space when not in use, plus I am not looking to currently spend a lot of cash to get/make a real off road trailer.

What do you think? What kind of set up do you have and mpgs.

Thanks!

My MPG's are low (10 - 12 MPG), but I think there is more too it than simply having a roof rack.

Anyone else with some input on this?

Just picked up an over the tire basket for 60 bucks off CL
That shouldn't affect mpgs but still not enough storage

I pulled Jet ski I just bought with my JK door the other day and was surprised how easy it pulled on the expressway. It is over 1000lbs and it seems like the the jeep cut out the wind resistance.

I would probably rather pull a smaller trailer than put a rack n the roof with a bunch of stuff on it.
