Default Need a summer top (Safari??)

Hey everyone, So i'm getting really tired of taking off my hardtop when it gets sunny for a couple days but it seems like the weather here just can't stay nice! so i'm constantly putting on and off the hardtop and its getting REALLY annoying. So i'm looking for something that I can just throw on in case of a couple days of rain instead of taking on/off the hardtop. I don't have the funds for a full soft top so I'm wondering about my other options...I was thinking maybe a safari top? would this keep me and the interior somewhat dry on a rainy day? or do need more? What should i be looking for? how is the besttop safari top?

any help would be GREATLY appreciated! thanks all

With the Safari Top, you need also a Wraparound Windjammer and a Duster Deck Cover (with the Mopar tailgate bar) With that, no rain will come in your Jeep

Just a quick note to check on....

Several of our So Cal guys are complaining about the safari top on a 2dr.! The complaint is the two straps in the back either ripping or straps working themselves loose at higher speeds and sliding forward on the bar creating a hell of a flap. I know that the safari top should not be driven at hi-way speeds but who reads the cautions anyways

I have the Bikini with the deck cover and jammer......
Ok Cali rain is not really rain but this combo keeps it out well ...... hope that helps with your decision...

O yea, do i need to buy any other mounting hardware for this setup too? door surrounds?

IIRC, Bestop is not making the wrap-around windjammer to fit the four doors, but there is a thread where someone managed to jimmy it into working. And, yes, for protection from the weather you'll want doors and door surrounds. With all of that, you virtually have a softtop. Also, for the duster, you'll need to buy some rod that goes along the rear tailgate lip.

Currently I run just the safari top. Got caught out in a pretty heavy, but brief (five minutes tops) downpour the other day. Pulled the drain plugs, pulled all of the gear out of the storage tub, took two days to dry everything out. It would have been less than one day had I not been lazy and pulled the carpet completely out, but I had time to just let the JK set.

Edit: Corrected wrap-around windjammer to avoid confusion. They do make an extension for the standard windjammer if you don't mind losing your back seats (but then why did you buy an unlimited? )

You will need a Duster cover, a Bikini top and channel, a soundbar wrap, a wraparound windjammer and door surrounds. This whole setup would cost you about 550m or 600......you can get a soft top for this pretty easy in the for sale section.

You will everything BaltChief said from the aftermarket standpoint, although the soundbar wrap is optional on a 4 door as it only helps to alleviate flap noise which can be solved with a simple towel.

IF you don't have any of the OEM softtop hardware, AND you want the cabin to be as sealed as possible, you will need door surrounds (2 or 4 depending on # of doors)...for the Safari top, AND 4 or 6 thumb screws. If you want the Duster cover, you will need the tailgate bar and the 2 plastic clips that it hooks into. For a 4 door for all this OEM softtop hardware at your local dealer, you're talking $400+. There are better deals online, and if you can find a full softtop local, I suggest that.

I'm running a Bestop Safari with all the OEM softtop hardware. I also have the Bestop Duster and the standard WindJammer installed. It's pretty good driving around, but sitting in a parking lot it will get wet inside. The water will drip down the front doors on the inside and get a little wet. The Safari top does not go back quite far enough to cover the back sides just behind the rear door frames.

There is a misconception that Bestop does not make a WindJammer for the 4dr JK. This is wrong. There is the standard WindJammer which is what I have and mounts behind the rear seats and attaches to the Duster. There is also a Wraparound WindJammer which I understand to be designed to mount behind the front seats with the rear seats folded flat and to require the Duster Extension piece. I did not like the idea of this setup unless I could afford rear solid half doors. I do not know how sealed off this setup would be from rain pooling in the rear of the vehicle.

There is a member here that made a great adaptation to his and has a nice sealed compartment... https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/jk-show-tell-33/wrap-around-windjammer-other-mods-pics-34975/ I've thought I might do this later in the year instead of going back to my hardtop.

I would also strongly encourage you to look at a Mopar Sun (something) top. They sell a Safari top for about $125 that is supposed to fit better than the Bestop version, and it approximately the same price. I have yet to see one in person, but have seen comments that it is a better fit and fits more like the OEM softtops over the doors therefore making a better seal.

It's called the Sun Bonnet (terrible name!). There are two versions, one for owners of a softtop, the other for non-owners. I have the latter. It came with the channel header built-in (so, if comparing cost to the Bestop, add the channel header in for that one). It also has large Velcro panels that secure the top over the driver and passenger doors to reduce flapping. Regardless, driving down the Interstate last weekend the front pushed up (in front of the sound bar) and the back pushed down, causing our passenger to need to duck his head a little. We had to readjust the rear roll bar straps to get it back to normal shape after that. I still like it--lots. Much better than no top when the sun is really hot, and does provide a little protection from rain.

I purchased the safari over the weekend, it was nice having it open with the heat we are having. And yep got the wonderful wind flapping going.
