Do some searches, you will find a lot of threads on winches and bumpers.

I am also looking for a winch (along with bumpers). This will be my first winch. Some of the things I am taking into account are how often I may use a winch, weight of the winch, (thinking about going synthetic line to help reduce weight), what are the most likely uses I will put the winch through, and cost.

you might use your winch on-road in a snow storm or other unusual occurrence, but situations are few and far between. You obviously can't string your winch line across an open road - it irritates people. Off-road, you may get stuck where there is no tow truck and few other vehicles. I am big on self-reliance. While most people will stop and help, I don't want to hope someone is coming along and roll the dice like that. So I have a winch on the front of my Jeep. If you are going to off-road a lot, get a Warn or Superwinch as they are proven to stand up to a lot of use. Otherwise the less expensive options offer good occasional use performance. I know this because..... There have been a couple of winch "shoot-out" articles in the magazines over the past year. Google that and you will be reading for a while. My summary of these is that there are only a few bad choices in winches and most will get the job done. the other take away; if you pay a premium, you will likely get a premium unit. Good luck.

Just take your time and research. If you see a winch you like don't hesitate to ask around for opinions of it. There is a ton of knowledge on here at your disposal. For starters since your Jeep is an unlimited I would recommend a 9000 lb or more winch

Look to the Warn or Superwinch brands, we actually have the Superwinch on sale right now. It is fast and strong.
Something to consider. Good luck in your choice. Hopefully you use it more to pull others out. Good karma.

It is pretty crazy these days we are seeing bigger and bigger winches on JK's because they are getting bigger and bigger.

Your winch rating should be at least 1.5 times the weight of your vehicle. Remember to use an estimate of the actual weight, including passengers, spare tires, coolers, fuel, etc., and not just what the door jamb says the weight is. Try to read up on how to safely use a winch as well. They pull harder with less wire on the drum, for example an 8000 lb winch may only pull 2000lb if there is only 30ft of the wire spooled out and there are still 4 layers of wire on the drum. Get a snatch block and use it every time. it doubles to capacity of the winch, therefore making the winch work half as hard to do the same thing.

Like WCDave said, you don't use it as much as you might think. I've used mine once in the past year. However, it is one of those things that you are sure glad you have if you need it. I've been happy with the Superwinch LP8500 on my S10.

I was told that the synthetic rope would be lighter and help keep my lift

Any thoughts

I very much like running synthetic rope. I've never had the wire variety, but have had it attached to my Jeep in recovery situations - felt more awkward to handle, but it does the job. Synthetic is reputed to be safer during catastrophic line/rope failures.

Here's a pic of me enjoying my synthetic rope.
