My rear axle seal went bad and i didn't notice until my pinion bearing went out.... Well I decided to try my own gear swap being successful in my camaro before.

3.73 to 5.13

Now my rear is whining like before.

Improper set up? Sounds just like a bad pinion bearing I was hearing before.

When I reverse quickly and i let off the gas i also hear a chatter.

The whining noise is on acceleration and deacceleration.

It was initially quiet when first installed.

I towed after the first 500 miles and the rear never got over 230 degrees F.

I used the stock pinion bearing shim.

Do the gears look excessively worn?

the wear pattern is not even. The carrier needs to be re-shimmed by adding more washers to get the ring gear to mate with the pinion. Then check your backlash, which is causing your chatter when backing up.

Look at page 8. Your pinion is too close to the ring gear. I would try moving the pinion away about .010-.015 change and see what the pattern does.

Make sure you hold good pressure on the carrier while you turn the pinion to get a good paint pattern. The pics of paint you posted are hard to tell, the first one does have the well defined straight line across the base of the tooth. The tell tale I see is in your last picture, it looks just like this pattern to me.

I do see that now! Thank you. I will take . 010 or more out of my pinion shim stack up and see how. That pattern looks.

I was unaware i needed to put the gears in a load to get a good mark.

Today i re shimmed the carrier to have less backlash and more carrier bearing preload. Same results the sound is still there.


Hopefully tomorrow i can mess with pinion depth



Do you think my gears are too worn to get rid of the whine?

I would get the gear pattern right and run them. They may be quiet right away but could whine for a while until they break in correctly.

Don't worry about setting carrier preload while checking for a pattern. That's the last thing you do. In which case, just add an even amount of shim on each side IE: .010 so it doesn't change yet puts preload. There's hardly any carrier bearing failures associated with too much preload when it comes to outside shims.
The pinion does look a little close. I wouldn't touch the carrier shims just yet as i would remove a bit from the pinion and check. The best thing to do is add/remove a large amount, run a pattern, and then you'll get a feel for "what does what". Kind of like a fiat fight if you throw a hard right just to gauge your opponents reaction.
When you're running the pattern you want a considerable amount of load on the carrier. I had trouble getting a good pattern until I incorporated this. I found it best to jam a rag in between the carrier and diff and turn the pinion. Good luck to ya homie.
