Question New Rubi Owner Needs Accessory Advice?

Hey Everybody,

I bought my first Jeep a couple days before Christmas. I got a 08 Rubi Unlimted; and am pumped out about my new ride. When I bought the vehicle my salesperson was suggesting some accessories to me.....that he highly recommed me buying to put on my new Rubicon. My question for you as a possible current Rubicon Unlimited owner is - do you agree that these accessories are a must? Is there anything else you recommend I buy for my Jeep that perhaps I haven't listed? Thanks for your help!

- Spare Tire lock - (apparently something to put on my spare tire to keep someone from being able to just unscrew the tire and steel it). Makes sense....but does anyone have a brand or style lock they recommend?

- Gas Cap Lock - (same as above.)

- Undercoating - some kind of aftermarket undercoat that is sprayed to the underside of the Jeep to keep its parts (engine, trans, muffler, etc) from rusting.

- Hood lock - to where nobody can open my hood without a key.

- Seat Covers - to protect my drivers, passenger, and rear seats. I am interested in this; but am wordering if there are any that anyone recommends....that fit the seats good, protect them well, and are affordable?

Again - any advice on any of this please let me know? Any other suggestions on what I should buy to protect my new investment........I would love to hear them!

Thanks again!

Depends on the area that you live. Wheel locks can be purchased at any auto parts store for about $20. Is theft a problem in your area?

- Gas Cap Lock - (same as above.)

Not too expensive from the dealer and key coded to your ignition key.

- Undercoating - some kind of aftermarket undercoat that is sprayed to the underside of the Jeep to keep its parts (engine, trans, muffler, etc) from rusting.

Just a way for the dealer to make more money. If you wheel it you'll scratch it up anyway. Besides you live in Texas there's no rust problem there.

I'm not a fan of seat covers, but lots o people have them. Check the vendor sites there are several available now.

Get two sets of wheel locks keyed the same, put three on the spare and one on each of the other four.
Get the gas cap lock, keyed to your ignition key.

Forget the rest except for the seat covers, some people like them, I personally hate the things and I love the seats in my Rubicon.
Prefer them over the Lexus leather in my IS350, or the leather in my Z-71, and about an even tie with the seats in my '71 'vette.

I ordered a set of gorilla wheel locks before even taking delivery of my JK. I live in the city of (supposed) brotherly love and they were a priority for me. I'd really hate to have my spare stolen.

Gas is more difficult to siphon than you think and I just haven't gotten to the hood lock. I did get the tuffy security glove box, after my stock one was broken into.

My two cents

I'd avoid the seat covers if you have side airbags. Some of the aftermarket ones are compatable, but the mopar ones are not. I was thinking about getting some but I have side air bags and I'm curious to see how well the Yes Essentials seat fabric holds up

I got some McGard wheel locks from the stealership when I first bought the JK and the key was SO CHEAP it broke this weekend. The tech said it happens all the time with McGard. Then they had to socket it out and ended up scratching my wheel. (they warned me prior)

STICK WITH GORILLA SPLINE LOCKS for all 23 lugs(including spare)

Forget all the other stuff

I differ a little here...mind you different environment exposures affect my opinions, so may not apply to you...however
Spare tire lock - YES, providing you like it and want to keep it, what brand? Whatever you find that works really, check your parts store or dealer priced pretty close
Gas Cap lock - YES, but thats just my opinion, I bought the Mopar one and it's keyed same as my ignition, no to pricey again, but if you've ever been concerned about siphoning or someone screwing with your tank which happens around here then good investment
Undercoating - Up North, YES! however they do NOT coat the engine or transmission or muffler or drive shafts or axles or stearing components, simply an ashphalt undercoat to protect the underside of the body, the tub, does it work...YES! I've seen HUGE differences between vehicles that were undercoated 20 years ago and those that were not with body rot...again different environment up here and yes if you bang and scrape the underside you'll scratch it off, but it's easy to touch up spray
Hood Lock- well...NO, but it's up to you, agreed not much to steal, probably most thieves aren't interested in going under the hood when they can slash through your soft top and get whats inside, but assess your area and decide if it's worth it to you, I don't think many people have done this...probably more of a nuisense than anything
Seat Covers - do you like your factory seats? YES, are you worried about their protection then YES, if not NO. This is a personal preference thing again, you decide, many options out there, nice ones too

Good luck and welcome!

Welcome.

The only two things I would suggest:

The wheel locks, because you don't want a spare stolen, especially if it's after market in any way.

And I'll make mention that I would get the gas lock too. One prevent theft, but to also prevent things from getting in the tank (i.e. - I've seen someone try to relieve themselves in my car's tank once. The only thing that stopped them was that it has a cap cover that is only able to be opened from the inside. I love living next to college... )
