Default New shocks / Question

Last summer I put a 2 1/2" teraflex coil lift with shock extenders on my X....Now I want to get new shocks, How do I determine what size shocks to buy? I'm not sure how to figure this out. Any opinions or input on witch brand of shock to buy would be appreciated as well. Thanks

If you are happy with you're lift and are going to stay with it, go to the teraflex website or a parts house that sells them, match it up with some shocks... or you can use any socks for up to a 3" lift kit....

any reputable 4x4 site will have a shock advisor to help you choose the right shock. i went with the teraflex 9550's for 2-5 inch lift. they pretty much only offer two sizes anyway (what i got and >6 inch lifts) so it was easy. i really love the teraflex's, good and solid and not too expensive at 58 bucks each. happy shopping

I've heard good things about Rusty's shocks. I'm pretty sure they are made by Gabriel. I drove a 2 door JK with Rusty's shocks and a budget boost and I will say it rode better than stock. They're available in stock to 6" of lift and everything in between. At roughly $35.00 a piece, ain't a bad option.

With that said, if price isn't a concern, I'm partial to OME's. The standard OME (yellow) JK 2.5" shock would work well with your setup.

The best way to do it, IMHO, is to disconnect a shock and compress that wheel up into the bump stop. Then measure the distance between the shock mount points. You would want a compressed length slightly less than that measurement. Then extend that wheel as far as you want it to droop without having the coil come loose and that is the extended length you want. Pick the brand you want and get a shock close to those specs. You should do this on a front wheel and a rear one. I've only built 2 jeeps, an XJ & a ZJ, but that method works every time.

Good Luck

With the TF 2.5 coil lift and OME LT shocks would you need to extend the brake lines? I ask because I have this lift now with the shock extenders and stock Rubi shocks and its a rugged ride. I want to add the OME LT shocks but want to know if I'll need to add anything else.

The OME RT shocks ride like a dream with the OME LD springs. You'd probably see a similar result with the TF shocks. You're right on the border of needing brake line extensions with that set-up. Extensions aren't very expensive, although I decided to go with new lines. I say get the extensions to be safe.

Ok just got off the phone with Stan at Northridge4x4.ca and he says he would recommend running the normal length OME shocks with my set up (TF 2.5 coil lift). He said the normal length OME shocks are designed to work with the OME coil lift. He said the LT shocks wold require me to get into brake lines etc.
