Nitto Mud Grappler Tires
Thanks guys for all the feedback. I think I'll go ahead and pull the trigger on them. As I said, it's not my DD so I'm not worried about the noise. Actually, (and you can call me crazy) I like the noise, let's people know I'm coming. Those of you running the 37's did you do anything else aside from the driveshaft replacement and the gussets on the C's? Eventually I'll swap out the axle shafts and upgrade the brakes. But that a few more months down the road. Thanks again Jeff
You cryo treated your housing or your gears? Cryo treating gears is good stuff. Doing it to the axle is bad news. The housing needs to be able to flex a little under stress. Cryo will make it hard and prevent it from flexing. More likely to break the housing.
He's talking about the shaft. I wouldn't imagine that the shaft would do well hardened like that.
Gotcha. There was a list I found somewhere of what should and shouldn't be treated. As I recall, it was motor internals and gears (trans, diff, etc). I'd agree that axle shafts should not be.
I'm running the same tire you are asking about on a 4 door with hard top. (I ordered the Trail Grappler M/T and these showed up so I went with them. Oh well I thought, since I've always liked the look but have been weary of the sound.) From the inside I was pleased that they weren't as loud as some of my friends with the same tire on full size trucks. People have commented that they can hear the Jeep coming from inside their vehicles even when doing 45 down an urban street. The sound brand new I would compare them to my old 35" BFG KM2's with a year's worth of driving on them. I do not notice the tire being harsh on the road, but perhaps I have been running lower pressure than some??? For balancing, mine have 8 oz of BBs and seem to run true with no balance issues I can tell. Gears are 4.88. Other axle upgrades to come.
My wife likes the look, sound, ride quality, and driving it so no complaints from me yet.

I ran Mud Grapplers 37x13.5x17 for 39000 miles and they had about 30% tread remaining. Loud as a B17 bomber rolling down the freeway, and very rough on the road even with 28 psi. Off road they were awesome in rocks, mud sand, water crossings and soft dirt. Being mainly a daily driver they killed my gas mileage even further, but they looked good. I just switched over to Trail Grapplers in the 37x12.5, and I could not be happier. Very little road noise, better ride due to D rating vs E with Muds. I highly recommend the Trail Grappler over Muds unless you wheel all the time. First two pics are Trail and last two are Muds.
I am on my 3rd set of Mud Grapplers and only because I have sold my old wheels to upsize and upgrade. I was out this weekend in muddy conditions and these tires perform as expected. I have climbed rocks, logs, and slick conditions and they are great. I air mine down to 8psi on bead locks and they run well with this set up.
On road they are louder than other tires but that the trade off is good off road performance. They wear well and look mean so I hope this help you in your decision.
