I use mobile 1 extended interval. I change it every 10 k whether the light cons on or not. I change the oil filter every 5k.
Mine runs cooler on mobile one and with normal driving on the highway at 60 mph. The oil is still transparent at 5k when I change the filter. No additives in mine but have heard good things about Lucas oil additive. Be very carefully about anything that changes the viscosity. Stay within recommended range.
I actually picked up about one mile per gallon when I switched to mobile 1. I have a 70 d100 with a 360 that has 288k on it using same oil with no issues and never rebuilt. I also do 10k changes on that.

I do bout every 3-5k with regular castrol or penzoil recommended weight. I have tried synthetics but I burned more oil in between oil changes.

I change every 5k or so. Just depends what I have been doing. Mobil 1 synthetic 5w30. I tried 5w20 but seemed to burn about a quart between changes switched to 5w30 and much better.

Not sure I understand the changing of the filter half way between oil changes or even waiting until 10k seems silly.

With the better oil and tighter engine tolerances there isn't any reason to go 3k on oil changes. Unless u like giving oil companies more money

The increase from 3k to 5-6k was the introduction to higher quality synthetic oils. It has to do with simple chemistry and how long it takes for the oil to lose efficiency (a combination of degradation of the oil and getting dirty). I change my synthetic oil every 6k+ and it has always looked pretty clean and could probably go longer but something to remember is once it is dirty it is damaging your engine. Granted it's not just miles but also time (3 months for regular oil, 6 months for synthetic oil). But in my opinion, the small investment upfront in preventive maintenance pays dividends in overall maintenance and I have had my fair share of vehicles and prefer keeping them long after others would have gotten something else.

You should try a longer life filter like the fram ultra. It'll easily go the 10k interval you follow. So would regular mobil 1 oil.

If you're getting up to 10k without the oil change indicator, I'm going to guess you do a lot of highway miles and not too many short trips or cold starts.

I'll bet your engine is spotless, too.

What is your oil life monitor telling you? It's conservatively set up for SM or SN certified conventional oil.

If you're using a good name brand conventional 5w-20 or 5w-30 and an appropriate filter you can be confident in following the oil change indicator. When it alerts you, just change within 500 miles and reset the system.

It's very possible that a 3000 mile interval is right for you. Or it could be much much longer. Depends on how you drive. The oil life monitor takes a bunch of variables into consideration and measures them against how you actually use the vehicle.

If you do nearly all short trips, rarely getting the oil up to operating temp, stop and go traffic, cold weather driving you might very well have a oil change warning at 2500-3000 miles. In which case, your 3000 mile interval is good maintenance.

If every time you start the engine you drive a gentle 50 mile highway trip, you may not get the warning until over 10,000 miles. In which case, a 3000 mile interval is a total waste.

Today's certified oils are quite excellent. Engines easily outlast the vehicles they are put into. As long as you keep it filled, so check the dipstick often.

Isn't the oil change indicator just tied to mileage? I've changed my oil around every 3500-4000 miles and had the indicator come up a week after the oil was changed twice. I thought it was set for 3500 miles after you reset it. If it were based off actual measurements or performance you shouldn't be able to reset it and have it stay off without changing the oil.
