I understand guys wanting to keep the stock rails. But I was under the impression these things were an either/or situation.

Your correct, you don't need both. As for me, it's all about appearance! I like the pics with both. Although with the price of gas going up and up I may reconsider the extra weight! I think I remember reading that the stock rails weight a couple hundred pounds.

I looked at these when I had a 2-door. The information on Olympic's own website said these only mounted in the UP position on 2-doors. This may be something you want to check into.

Default olympic reversa bars

ok so they got here early (thanks morris4x4)... anyway taking off the oem rubicon rock rails was pretty simple (and now for sale) they have 2 main bolts (forgot what size) that hold them on and i think 4 smaller ones (10mm) took about 3 mins to unbolt and remove the factory rails. the olympic bars from what i can tell only fit in the up posistion (without modification) although my roomate wanted to see them in the down posistion so i held em that way while i was under the jeep and he said uh no, you lost a foot of clearence. they bolt on using factory bolts and locations so its pretty easy, there is 4 bolts that hold it on (forgot that size too). total time was less then 15 mins.

((i know, its not much for a write up but i completely forgot to really be aware while i was doing it, and the half pint of jack didnt help))

if anyone wants a "real" write up with pictures and crayons pm me and take it back apart, but honestly with a walmart tool pouch a half pint and 15 mins, you can pretty much figure it out. (i didnt find the directions till after i was done and bout to throw the box away which by then was too blurry to read anyway)

o yeah, and i was installing it by myself but a third handy would have helped.

flip em over, not to be a smartass... but thats pretty much how its done. as for the other things to think about the mounting plate is welded on there to accomodate the up posistion. so you could either make one and weld it to the other side (which would really be a pain to tighten your bolts, or you can torch off the original and re-weld it to the other end. (what i would do if i was going to make steps out of them.) really wouldnt be hard, and still could have the entire project done in less then an hour if your handy with your torch
