$1,000 vs. $75. Thanks for the info. I'm trying to go the ingenious way of airing up tires on the cheap.

I think that would be great... I'm actually thinking about upgrading the tank myself.

The advantage (especially with a 5 gal tank) is that you'd be able to air up 2 tires in seconds each. Provided you filled the tank before hand... You could take a quick beer break while the tank was being replenished (probably 5-6 minutes) then air the other two tires in seconds each. With a 2.5 tank I can air up one tire from 15-35psi in second so I get three 2 minute beer breaks .

Other advantages would be a high pressure source of air to blow dust/water off things and the ability to use air tools on the trail...

A 5 gal tank will take up more space. If that's not an issue to you, then I see no problem. A smaller 2 or 3 gallon can be mounted underneath the Jeep. I don't think the 5 gallons I've seen woud fit, at least not the type you're taling about. The long, skinny ones might.

I have a $50 compressor that I bought at 4wheelparts...works like a champ. I tested it and it inflated from 20psi to 35psi in just about 3 minutes. The problem with it is it gets super super hot. So filling all 4 tires, which I haven't done yet, probably necessitates some downtime between fills.

For those who have done vair or other onboard compressors under the hood, pics of where you're mounting it would be great.

I did a viair system, but I didnt mount the compressor under the hood. I moumted it in my stock front bumper between the fog lights. When I eventually get a new bumper, Im gonna move it to on top of the bash bar like another member did. I have my tank mounted where the stock muffler was. It makes me nervous there though, I think need to fab up a skid for it. I havent hit it yet, but I know its only a matter of time. And no, no pics of it yet.

I guess I just have too much money, but I am going to run an OBA system from Kilby Enterprises that uses a belt driven York compressor. It puts out enough air to run tools not just air up tires. I consider the inexpensive $25-$100 units to be for emergency use only. They are not designed to fill up large tires on a regular basis.
