Onboard air
The advantage (especially with a 5 gal tank) is that you'd be able to air up 2 tires in seconds each. Provided you filled the tank before hand... You could take a quick beer break while the tank was being replenished (probably 5-6 minutes) then air the other two tires in seconds each. With a 2.5 tank I can air up one tire from 15-35psi in second so I get three 2 minute beer breaks
.Other advantages would be a high pressure source of air to blow dust/water off things and the ability to use air tools on the trail...

Take a look at this.
32" tire from 20 psi to 35 psi in under 2 minutes. About 65 bucks. Mine has been running strong for months. Best portable compressor I've ever seen.

I'm working on a system w/ this compressor. Stay tuned.
A 5 gal tank will take up more space. If that's not an issue to you, then I see no problem. A smaller 2 or 3 gallon can be mounted underneath the Jeep. I don't think the 5 gallons I've seen woud fit, at least not the type you're taling about. The long, skinny ones might.
I have a $50 compressor that I bought at 4wheelparts...works like a champ. I tested it and it inflated from 20psi to 35psi in just about 3 minutes. The problem with it is it gets super super hot. So filling all 4 tires, which I haven't done yet, probably necessitates some downtime between fills.
For those who have done vair or other onboard compressors under the hood, pics of where you're mounting it would be great.

I guess I just have too much money, but I am going to run an OBA system from Kilby Enterprises that uses a belt driven York compressor. It puts out enough air to run tools not just air up tires. I consider the inexpensive $25-$100 units to be for emergency use only. They are not designed to fill up large tires on a regular basis.
here is a good twin cylinder compressor from the same company that makes the MV50/superflow/sunami/Q industries.
