Default powerplant question

Should I go with the powerplant hp or hd. It looks like I would be stupid to go with the hp but any help would be great.

We have the Warn Power Plant HP. I believe it is built for vehicles like the Jeep. The HD is for large vehicles like trucks and is more than you will probably need for normal use. Also, it doesn't fit as many Jeep bumpers as the HP. We've used it on another Jeep pulling a ZJ up a high embankment and over the top. It worked real smooth and I am very happy with this choice.

What makes you think they are different sizes? Looking at the Warn web site it appears the only difference between the HP and HD is the Gear Ratio. With the HD gear ratio you can theoretically pull more, using less current, but not as fast as the HP. The HP also comes with more/thinner wire rope.

Yup, the only difference is the gear ratio. The HP is faster but only does 9500. The HD is slower but does 12000. I chose the HP, because I have no plans of being a Hummer recovery vehicle.

Thats what I figured. I looked at the specs and there is not that much difference in line speed once you break down the math. Any more help will be great.

There are a couple threads on the HD not fitting bumpers that the HP does fit.

I got the HD (from Norrthridge4x4) because of the power usage (easier on the battery/electrical system), and the potential extra pulling power. The only drawback for me was the shorter cable length - but I’m planning to use synthetic, so I can still get 125’ and pull 12,000 pounds.

So - you guys with the 12k lb winches have BUMPERS rated for 12k Lb winches?

(And, yeah - they're the same size winch....just trading speed you want for power you won't need...)
