preparing for a build
just bought a jk sport bone stock, got a few questions. 9th degree by aev or tera flex. i want it to be a daily driver, but will still kill it on the trails. i want to run 35's what kind of gearing would you run with a set up like this. ive had 2 tj's and paid lots of money to make them trail machines, never turned a wrench on them. this time i want to have a big hand on building them myself. im open to any ideas or pointers
AEV has the kit that every off road magizine said was the best on road. Not too sure about tera flex. I hear great things about tera flex and there quality parts but not too much about how good they are on the road. The only issue people complain about on the AEV is the CAM bolts to adjust your caster angles. Lots of people are using the AEV kit with Tera flex lower adjustable control arms. Cant go wrong with both!!
I tell you what, it's up to you and how much money you want to spend. I have the aev nth degree 4.5 for my 4 door. I tell you the pros and cons of it from what I've experienced.
The ride is great and feels really solid on the road. It rides almost like stock does....just higher up. Off road it performed really well. I got great flex and there were a number of people that were very impressed with it while watching.
The down side is that I don't believe it was designed and TESTED very well. I think they probably did more road testing than anything else. I bought my lift before they started adding the drop down brackets for the control arms. The problem with the lift initially was that they gave you cam bolts. To install these you had to bore out the lower control arm bracket to set them in so they made the correct adjustments to your alignment.
After looking through the forum I read over and over again how this cam bolt was loosening up from going off road and doing decent wheeling, eventually causing the good ol death wobble. I became very paranoid about it and kept checking it until just a few days ago, to my dispare, I noticed it had wollowed out the bracket hole as described in the forum. Well to correct this, AEV is now selling those brackets so you don't have to use the cam bolts. The down side is that you lose 2 inches of clearance at the bracket. I never got anything in the mail or any type of "hey we screwed up and realized this is a problem, let us help you fix it" notification. So needless to say I'm a little miffed at their customer satisfaction. I recently called and left a message for their tech suppport and they eventually called me three days later...never talked to them because I missed the call. I definitely intend to call them back though to get SOME sort of compensation.
My advice, if your set on the AEV...which again I love the lift, just upset about having to spend the money to fix their f-up, ....I would get the lift, scratch the brackets, and by adjustable lower control arms as recommended to me by others here on the forum.
I think that AEV focused a lot on road testing with this product. They did design it to have great flex, just don't think that is what they were really looking at when they were selling it.
As for the Teraflex, I don't have any experience with it, but I've heard good things about it. If you're trying to save money for other toys for the jeep, I'd probably go with this cuz you can always upgrade. In retrospect, I probably would have gone with a different lift just because of the money factor. Again, great lift, just a lot of money for something that you could put together probably for a little less money....it does come with the Procal though and the front end high steering on mine hasn't caused ANY esp activation like a lot of other lifts have, but you can even buy the high steering kit from AEV to add on to your teraflex, I think..someone correct me if I'm wrong... and you'll still get the same effect.
Just my two cents. I saw the thread and couldn't resist. Thought I'd help out...
good luck!
