Thanks for all the responses/concerns so far. Yeah I forgot to mention that the first mods I did to my JK when I bought it was installing a Garmin GPS system and a Uniden 520xl cb radio with a PA Speaker...

I noticed everyone is pretty much saying under body protection too. I can't believe that totally slipped my mind. What areas/components under the body should I be worried about? And what are some good skid plate brands for the components/areas you think need protection?

Thanks again, and keep responding! This is very helpful so far.

why don't you wait on all the mods until after your trip? that's alot of additional weight that you won't need for your trip (unless its a trip full of offroading). if you're strictly going on a road trip then you'll want to be as fuel efficient as possible. as soon as you get back, then get your jeep modded.

The whole trip is offroading and camping...I have a map and trails already planned out to and in the process of completion to make the trip successful. The only time I'll be on the road is when I have to cover a long distance in a short amount of time or need to take a trip into town.

ahh, well i'd recommend you get the following at a minimum:

1) handgun. there are soooo many crazys out there. you'll feel much more comfortable camping with this. just make sure to check the laws of each state/city you're traveling in. at least have some pepper spray on you.

2) secure storage - either the secure trunk, tuffy console, etc. that way you can keep valubles locked up when you need to run in somewhere or when you sleep.

Sounds like a really great trip to take. I'm curious if you could post a map with the rout you're planning on.

I agree with woodmasterfox better to be over prepared then SOL out in BFE.

I would start with protection.

Rock Rails, Oil pan skid and evap relocation. I would then get a roof rack. I would do these before any other modifications

Then Tools starting with a Hi-lift Jack. Make sure you have a good breaker bar, Metric, US and torx sockets & wrenches, (Including small wrenches for U-joint repair), BFH, Channel locks, vice grips, screw drivers, Volt-ohm meter. Spare wire of various gauges. At least one of every fuse used in the jeep

Soft tools: Tire plug kit, (you already said you were getting a CO2 tank), JB weld, Duct tape, RTV sealent. 6 quarts of oil. Diff gear lube. Printed service manual or laptop and service manual CD.

Spares: U-joints and I would look for used D30 front axle shafts. I'll bet you can pick some up, that were swapped out, for a resonable price on this forum

I carry this much and more every time I go wheeling. My wife used to kid me about it. Then she went 4 wheeling with me. You have to be able to do field repairs!

I think you're all right...I really should get a handgun. I've been to a trailer park once in Montana, and there are a bunch of crazies there

I'm gonna look into the skidplates now and definitely spare axle shafts and a flat tire repair kit, along with a hi-jack lift.

I promise everyone that pictures of my finished JK will be up when it's completed in July. Sorry for the long wait, but I promise it will be sick thanks to all your suggestions. And as for the trail map, I'm working on the finishing touches now, so either I'll have pics up of that hopefully by the weekend if I get a few school papers done.

Thanks again for everything.
