Default Quadratec Hood with Air Filter??

Gents,
I have purchased and installed the hood seen here http://www.quadratec.com/products/12503_101_T.htm

I like the way it looks and it seems to function well from the standpoint that i can see heat dissipating from under the hood. Also (knocking on wood here) there has been no problems from any heavy rain.

BUT, I may be inviting problems. It was/is my goal to use a cone type element such as the AEV for my intake. However, with the vented hood, it seems like I may be inviting water aspiration since there doesn't seem to be any protection for the filter from the elements. So my questions are, is there any way to run a cone type induction filter with this hood and if not, are there any airbox mods that I can use to get greater airflow to my engine without worry of aspirating water in the rain?

Thanks all,

SaharaMike

You can use a high flow drop-in type panel filter. K&N has one available now. You could also drill/cut some holes in the bottom part of the housing (obviously before it gets filtered) for some extra airflow. I haven't looked into that for the JK, but I've seen it done on lots of other vehicles w/ no problems.

I wish somebody would come out w/ an oil-free panel style. I'd like to try that.

Search under filter mods. There's a farly recent one that describes what you're looking for and has pics.

The chances of you hydrolocking an engine from "just" rain is slim to none. I have ran a snorkel in downpouring rain that I KNOW was sucking water in with no issues at all.

Agreed.

Even if the filter was sitting directly under the vent in a downpour it's not likely to cause a problem. They are somewhat water repellent and only cause problems when they are submerged.

That being said K&N makes a PreFilter that you could cover the cone with that is supposed to provide extra protection.

The way the kits are designed, they have a plastic heat shield that covers the front, drivers side and rear of the cone, so it should be pretty well blocked off from the vent anyway.

This is not a Quadratec hood, it's made by AEV and sold by Quadratec and others. I bought mine straight from AEV since the shipping was cheaper.
I've never had any water problems. The hood was e coated black and getting it painted was not a problem. The only problem was delivery, Fed Ex used the first one as a sled so I sent it back and got another.
