Yeah looks are one aspect. I live/drive where it gets 110 in the summer and it keeps the engine alot cooler, hence the name "Heat reduction Hood". Yes the black pieces are functional they are perforated metal that allow the engine compartment to vent.

I've never had any water problems. The hood was e coated black and getting it painted was not a problem. The only problem was delivery, Fed Ex used the first one as a sled so I sent it back and got another.
Looks Great 4JEX, how's the metal thickness/flexibility compared to the OE hood?

You can really feel the quality. Much heavier gage metal. Maybe a 15 pound difference.

4JEX,

A quick question about your CAI. Where the CAI box seals with the hood, do the vents in either to top or the side open into the box? It seems like it might be sealed from the top vent, but not the side. I wanted to get your input on whether or not those vents are open to the CAI.

Thanks for posting the pics. I do not have access to a digital camera.

For that price, plus shipping, and then painting it at the dealer.... I think I'll just take a hole-saw or sawzall to mine.
It looks great. And it sounds like it's functional. But for that kind of cash, the hood should come painted to match your Jeep and have an air intake built into it! Hell, for that much money, it should come with a hot chick on the top of it!

The vent on the side opens up to the CAI about half way. I tested this in rain and in the drive way when washing the vehicle. In all aspects the infiltration of water is minimal. I'm not worried. If this is of concern to you then I would get a CAI that has a lid. I think the AFE CAI only opens to the front of the vehicle, you should check first as I am not 100% sure.

That was an option but the wife said no way.
