Default question about backspacing on rims

I am looking at the soft 8 rims by Crager what is the difference in 5 in. backspacing and +12 mm offset. They are both talking about the hub in relation with the wheel right?

backspacing = the distance from the back of the wheel to the mounting surface usually in inches.

offset = the distance from the mid line of the rim to the mounting surface + or - (usually in MM to piss you off)

to prevent rubbing I would go 4 inch BACKSPACING or less (3.75, 3) what diameter rim are you looking at and I will find you what you need.

I am looking for 16 x 8" rims. Unless there is a 15" steel rim I could run with out using spacers. A major tire chain here is offering A black steel rim that looks like the soft 8's but the only information he could give me was it had 12 mm offset. He and I didn't know if I could use them with 315/75/16 tires with out using spacers.
