Default Question about regearing

Guys,

I know very little when it comes to working on a vehicle but I was just curious what all is involved in regearing my JK with a 5.13? Is it pretty straight forward or are there other components involved that must be tweaked or changed at the same time?

I just don't want to decide to regear and then afterwards find out it was the wrong decision or that I needed to have other work completed to make everything work. I have a 2 1/2" skyjacker lift and would like to put some 33.5's on at the end of summer and thought regearing may benefit more than hurt.

I would appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks

From what I hear, 5.13 is way to much for 33's. I have 3.21 gears in my Jk with 33's and I have no problem with power loss. I still use 6th gear at 50+ mph. I hardly even use 1st gear. Too much juice in 1st if you ask me

I have to disagree. I'm running 33's and while I dont notice much loss through the city, this thing is an absolute dog on the highway now. I'm lucky if I can maintain 95 - 100 km/h in 4th on inclines, not overly steep ones at that. Maybe its got something to do with atmospheric conditions. You live in CO, the elevation is no doubt higher than it is here and the air is probably much less dense. I'm re-gearing to 4.10's as soon as Alloy USA starts shipping them again.

Default Thanks..

I would most definitely have an experienced mechanic do the install. My question was more or less is the regearing going to benefit the power of my JK amongst the other under the hood upgrades I have or plan to do?

Like I said earlier, I really know nothing when it comes to mechanic work and I don't want to do something just because I think it will help in the power department and later realize it did more harm than good.

If I do decide to go through with regearing are there any other parts that need to be upgraded or replaced at the same time?

Thanks guys!

Gearing is the most cost efficient horsepower you can buy. Period.

Just got gears done and would say one of the best mods I have done. Before you do it really consider your long term plan. Many say they only want to run 33's and then a year later they wish they had gone 35's. This is something you only want to do once.

The only thing I would consider doing at the same time is lockers if you don't already have them. The diff is already cracked open so save yourself some money on labor.

Unfortunately I have to drive my jeep MANY miles for work, otherwise, I would put 35's on tomorrow.

Two sponsors Off Road Evolution and Screaming Lizard offer it for $1000. Some have been quoted between 1000-2000. Best advice call around and be willing to drive.

I didn't see which transmission you have? (power and gearing is different depending on which you have, so try not to put too much weight into advice from the 'other' guys)

When you get a chance, browse through the Drivetrain FAQ
https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/show...276#post211276

Plug some numbers into the chart and see where you are and where you want to be.

would like to put some 33.5's on
Is that the mfg's listed height? Do a search to see what the 'actual' tire height is, and don't be surprised if it is around 32". (use that number in the chart, not the mfg's spec!!)

For 'everything you ever wanted to know about gearing', read this one:

Other than the gears, you will want an install kit or an overhaul kit as well. (overhaul kit is better, but if you jeep is low miles, you can get away with an install kit)

What gears do you currently have? If you have a D30 front axle with 3.21 gears, you will want a new front carrier that can handle the new gears. (3.73 and 4.10 gears do not need a new carrier)

And as mentioned above, this is an excellent time to put lockers in, as the axle is already open and it will save you extra labor charges...
