Question on Lockers
Im not familiar with the process of installing lockers in my Jeep and I was wondering what it entails, how expensive is the job, how expensive are the parts and is there an economical way to get this done.
Also, can anyone tell me what type of differential is in my 2010 JK Unlimited Sport. It does have the upgraded customer preferred package with 3.73: 1 gear ratio, Dana 44 heavy duty solid rear axel, tow package and full skid plates. It has the Command Trac system but other than the way it shifts in and out of 4WD what does that means. Is this a limited slip or what is it.
Thanks

The command trac should be a rear limited slip. Your rear axle is a Dana 44, your front is a Dana 30. To add a locker the center differential needs to be removed, ring gear removed from it and reinstalled/setup by a shop. (or if you have friends with experience in setting up ring and pinion patterns)
Most would highly consider changing to a lower ratio to help getting up to speed and off setting larger tires at, mostly, highway speeds.

In your front d30, you can install a lockrite or aussie locker without removing the carrier. It's a simple install and they work great. I've installed them and I'm just a weekend wrencher. They are engaged all the time, but in 2wd, on the road, you hardly know it's there except for some minor clicking when turning. Some call them a "lunchbox locker." They cost about $260. A selectable locker like ARB, OX, and Eateon (you can turn it on or off) cost $700-$900 plus $250-300 installation. with these, the carrier has to be removed and the gears reset. Only an experienced mechanic should do it.
Thanks guys for that information. That gives me some informed ideas on ways to go. I think I would probably leave this mod up to the pro's if I decide to go this route. That selectable locking system is quite expensive. I thought it might be.
There is a lot of good info here but also some that isn't quite correct.
When adding a a new diff (not new gears, just a diff) your only real concerns are carrier bearing preload and gear backlash. Gear set up isn't changed so most guys with the proper tools and instructions can do this job fairly easily.
If you are changing gears, it's best to leave it to the pros. Gear set up (mailnly pinion depth) is crucial and proper tools are required. The tools aren't cheap and few people would ever lend them out. I've seen a lot of home done gear jobs by GREAT mechanics that don't last due to poor set up.

X2 I am also going to get posi in my rear, a lot of the times I have to shift in 4wd for little get outs from the drive way. Lockers are noisy unless its a spool, I've had both in a Camaro, lockers do a lot of clicking (noisy), spool is just for straight line stuff (no differentiation in corners you have to spin your wheels going around corners).
I personally am going with True Trac. I have put them in, and its kind of a pain, if your not comfortable doing it, I would take it somewhere before you have it on jack stands and is not very mobile at that time. Plus for me anymore, future problems your up the creek if you do it yourself. Have fun

Command Trac refers to the NV241 two-speed transfer case, not your differential. I doubt you have the tow package and limited slip differential with the 3.73 gears. You can check your window sticker or call your Jeep dealer with your VIN to be sure. Any aftermarket LSD or locker will be an upgrade. And lockers are not noisy (as mentioned above) unless your talking about Detroit lockers or the lunchbox types. Selectable lockers or Detroit Truetracs are the way to go.
