How is it that it costs $1600 locally for a gear job when I've seen gear jobs advertised on here for 1000 or less including the parts? What is the difference? I don't get it. I'm thinking it would be cheaper for me to ship my jeep to texas or possibly drive someplace closer than to get it done in New England. Is there anyone in New England/NY/NJ area that has had their gears done for close to 1000? I'm looking to go with 5.38 gears in my Rubicon but refuse to pay 600 more than the next guy for the same job. I'd rather pay 600 to ship my jeep and have it done than to support a local business looking to rip people off.
A lot of shops reuse your bearings and use cheep oil. you get what you pay for. 1600 is still a little much but 1300 for the job done right would be a fair price... Youll love the 5.38
If people can get the $$$, they will charge you. I think part of it is that alot of 4wd shops, "shop out" their gears installs to someone who does it all the time. That way if an installer is charging$250 per axle for labor the the 4wd shop can charge 4-500 per axle labor, make $$$ ,and never even touch it. Trick is to find the guy they use.
You are on the East Coast. Install costs are higher out that way for some reason.
Shop around. Get in touch with any/all of your local 4wheel drive clubs and see who they recommend. Post in the Staging Area for your neck of the woods. Do an internet search of the bigger cities within a few hours of you and check those shops.
I drove two hours to get mine done. $950 cheaper than the local shops...

Here in the WI area gears cost about $12-1600 for labor. Guess everyone charges a little different, but if they're a good shop its worth it in the long run.
I paid about $ 1500 with new axle seals, plus the overhaul kit from Northridge.

On top of that, if something goes wrong are you gonna ship it back to Texas for repairs? Keep in mind this site is full of folks who claim they can rebuild an engine in fifteen minutes and can get a new Jeep for fifteen dollars. Not saying some folks are full of it, but....
Stay local with that kind of work. You may never have any problems with it, but even the best shop'll sometimes have issues with seals and stuff.

We use quality parts and do so much that we pass the savings onto the customers. Most JK gear jobs are low mileage and set up great. I try to cater the job to each customer as the customer needs the best always.
I love Texas so it is a fun place to run a full service shop
