Default Recommendations on best transmission cooler

Guys,

I´ve been getting the 'chime' of the overheated transmission when climbing long hills, so I've finally decided to add a transmission cooler.

I'm not running anything that special: I have MT 33's and a 3 in lift, and although I really like putting things on the jeep, I like bolt on's - no mess kits, since I don't really know a lot about mechanics (but I can follow instructions!)

Any recommendations on what transmission cooler to put in?

Thanks for your help!

B&M #70268 seems to be popular

Here is a good write-up thread to get you started.

Thanks nthinuf! And great write up! I just ordered mine so I can install it on the weekend!!!

Another quick question though: Do I need to worry about the air in the cooler when I hook up all of the plumbing? Is there a need to 'fill up' in any way the cooler and then connect it to the return line just like they done it in the other writeup here?

No need to worry about the air. It will all be flushed out on the first couple of seconds after start-up. Just like the air in a new engine oil filter.

And what do you guys think about the connecting tubes? I've seen contrary opinions about going with the plastic ones, mentioning the aluminum are the only real option.

Any thoughts?

"Best" will be different for everyone. Here is the writeup for mine. https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/jk-write-ups-39/trans-cooler-hard-line-install-58529/ Here is a link to the one I used. http://www.bmracing.com/PRODUCTS/Universal-SuperCoolers/Universal-SuperCooler-rated-at-29-200-BTU-11x11x1-1-2 29,200 BTU. That ain't a small one.

I installed the B&M on mine too. I warmed it up and then checked the fluid level on the transmission. I had to add about 3/4 of a quart to get it back where it should be. I didn't check the level before I started but that is where I ended up.

We wheel in slow motion at altitude for hours and I never get the chime now. I did get a chime or two last year before the cooler!

I tightened the clamps one more time after I got it completely warmed up. The hose softened up more than I thought it would and I added an easy half turn to get them snug once warmed up. I did install them in fairly cool weather so you may not see that much difference at this time of year. No leaks or issues in about 3000 miles.

Although you've ordered yours already I 'm going to post an alternative cooler. I went with a heat sink version ht tp://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/60352/10002/-1 It sits between the grill and the radiator on the cross member (also behind the winch) It doesn't interfere with the airflow through the radiator at all as the winch does that. So far I am seeing a 20 degree difference in temperatures. I am waiting to drive some mountain passes before I pass final judgment, but so far I've been more than pleasantly surprised.

Wow Redneck that thing is huge I wonder what temps you are running at. mine is rated at 14400 btu and I run between 135-175now,mostly in the 140-155 around town and 150-165highway, before the cooler I was always over 200 even around town.
