Question Regearing a Jk

hey, so i want to change out the 4.10s i have now for either 5.13s or 5.38s. I cant find 5.38s anywhere although WOL has them listed as being on his jeep, anybodey know where i could pick up a set? If i have little experience in the diff except putting in a set of lockers and changing out axles etc, how hard would it be for me to regear my jeep? Anybodey know of a step by step instruction anywhere and what tools i need? thanks appreciate all the help guys

superior makes them and i know that david at northridge4x4 sells them. give him a call and i'm sure he can help you out.

having said that, installing gears is not easy and i would HIGHLY recommend that you have a good shop do the install for you. also, if you are going to be running larger than 37" tires, i would not recommend going with 5.38's unless you are also upgrading your axles to something like a dynatrac pro rock 60. the pinion on a 5.38 is very small on a dana 44 and from experience, i can tell you that it won't last for very long.

I think what WOL is saying is that the 5:38 pinion gear is very small on a D44 and if you are going to run 40's you will have a lot of stress on that pinion. He is recommending upgrading your axles to a D60 with 5:38's. You would have a very tough set up then. As far as doing it yourself, you can and I have done it myself. It's not super complicated but takes a large series of specialty tools and the ability to not only remove and press bearings but crush the crush sleeves which is very difficult. Hope that helps. Gears is the best improvement you can do to your JK. I should have done it first....

Default I have a question about gearing as well. Help!!!

I was out wheeling this weekend and was talking with a guy who has a YJ. He told me that the Dana 44's could not fit anything bigger than 4.88 gears in a 2007 JK. He said that 5.13 would fit but I would have to do additional modification to make it work. I wanted to get a 4" inch lift with 35's and was hoping to change to 5.13. Is this guy correct or what. Thanks anyone for advice.

What 'additional' modifications was he referring to? The only thing I am aware of is if you have a D30 front axle (which you don't) with stock 3.21 gears (which you don't), you would need a new carrier to run a 3.73 or higher gear set.

See any of the posts above yours, or any of the hundreds of threads concerning 5.13's, or check any of the vendor sites that are selling 5.13's for JK's and you'll have your answer.

(Since you have a Rubi, you could even go to a 5.38...)

Thanks for the response. He told me that I would have to put in a new carrier to change my current 4.10 Dana 44's and go up to 5.13.
