Default Regearing, locking and confusion.

So I thought I had everything straightened out in my mind. Here are my plans.

I am going to 35's in the next few weeks (gussets and sleeves on the D30) and I'm regearing my 6 Speed to 4.88's.

I know that going from 3.21 to 4.88 I need new carrier(s) but do I need front and rear carriers or?

Also a couple of years ago I "won" a Spartan Locker at a Offroad Event and it's for the D44 but now I'm reading that the Spartan needs a new carrier to work in the JK D44. My question is will the larger carrier that I have to buy for the 4.88's work for the Spartan?

I know people will say, buy a Detroit if you're using any Auto-Locker but the Spartan was free and even if I wore out 3 of them I'd just then pay for a Spartan and I doubt I'd wear out 3 of them.

What exactly do I need to buy to get all this stuff installed? is the $1500 I was quoted including installation a fair price for all of this?

Thanks in advance and I've read a lot of not found all these answers.

I can't answer all your questions, but I trust my local shop and they quoted me $1500 for 5.13 in my 2011 automatic. So I think the price is right. I've seen cheaper, but I've also seen a lot more.

1500 isnt bad i paid around 1200 for everything, i went 4.88s as well yukon with master over haul kits and the d30 3.73 and up carrier i ordered them from david at northridge, you will only need the new d30 carrier the rear will work with the 4.88s. as far as the locker goes i have no idea i think the non rubi 44's are 30 spline i know im not much help on the locker part and im half awake lol

With 3.21's, the d30 will need a carrier, the rear d44 will not.

Read the other current thread on Spartan lockers. They are designed for the older d44's, not the new 'JK' d44's. You may be able to get it to fit with a new carrier and creative shimming and some custom work, but I haven't seen any write-ups on how to do it.

My opinion, you would be better off selling it and buying something designed to work in your rear axle, or maybe trading it for a front locker.

Thank you all for the replies. Were you happy with the 4.88's & 35's in your 6 Speed?

I thought I read that with a carrier out of a non JK D44 that the Spartan could go right into the rear of the JK. If it won't work, maybe I'll listen to the masses and get a Detroit Locker. Who has the best prices on gears and lockers? And what brands do I want to stay away from?

Thanks again,

RT

If you can find it again, post it. It would be good info to put in the other thread.

I have read a few posts indicating that people have put front d44 lunchboxes into rear jk d44's. But as I mentioned, I haven't seen any write-ups, or even anything to indicate how difficult, or how custom, the install was. My thinking is that if it was a direct fit, the locker mfg's would be listing the rear JK axles in the specs.

Ok, thanks for the info. Now to shop around for gears and a rear locker. I'm planning to leave the D30 unlocked especially since I have the factory axle shafts.

Ordered the stuff from Northridge today! Went with Yukon 4.88's and a Detroit for the rear! And new front carrier, Dave said it's a "loaded" Carrier what is the difference between that and a regular empty carrier other than $50?

Thanks,

Your installer will have less work to do with a loaded carrier.
