Fit it to the shaft just under the knob then smack the wrench with a hammer.

Short of a slide hammer, best method I've found so far.

I choked the tires, put trans in neutral, put XFR case in neutral as well, straddled the XFR case knob facing the dash, gripped the knob with my hands, and pulled straight up. I don't recall if I had the top off or not.
