RIPP Supercharger Real World Owner Experience
My basis for expecting better fuel economy was for 2 reasons one if the engine isnt working as hard at highway speeds reving up & down & downshifting it stands to reason that it will get a least somewhat better fuel economy. The very same reason that pickups with the base small hp engine generally get no better mileage on the highway than the slighlty higher hp engine especially if loaded at highway speeds.
The second & main reason was that the company itself made these claims & i specifically asked this along with numerous questions before placing my order.
In owning numerous turbo diesel trucks & now a F150 Supercrew every one of them got the same or better mileage when tuned with a aftermarket tuner of some brand while having considerably more power.
Thanks lefthand rubi for your helpful input as frankly it was one of only a couple.

Outside you're comparing apples and oranges. Saying the engine isn't working as hard is wrong. Have you decreased the amount of energy needed to move the wheels on the car? That can only happen by gear ratios, either through tires or gears, or by reducing the weight of the vehicle(big truck, little truck). Where chiptuners typically get MPG gains is by tweaking timing and fueling maps in the ECU or PCM. OEM tuning is typically very conservative, meant to allow wide range of uses. Chiptuners tweak these numbers to as close to optimal as they can. Now tuning it for stock power, they can reduce fuel useage. Changing timing and fueling they can also on non-FI cars create power. Typically this is where it's found and why Non-forced induction cars only get 5-10whp from chips.
Claims of HP, in my opinion, are probably when staying out of the trottle and not using the boost, therefore you'd get a gain due to this "more efficient" programming. If you're driving agressivly you'll never see these MPG gains. So a Jeep with 35's and 4.10 gears may need 15% throttle to produce then 100ft/lbs needed to maintain a certain speed untuned. The engine could only need 10% throttle to produce the 100ft/lbs needed with a tuned jeep. These savings can all be washed away if you use the new found power get to that speed more quickly.

I have had the RIPP kit on my Jk for almost a year now and about 7K miles.
Overall it is a good kit but I have had some issues with it.
1) The supplied Air Filter in the Kit is a JOKE! I ALWAYS run a vacuum bag when I am off road with multiple vehicles to save the filter. When I get back on the highway, off comes the bag. I pulled my air filter off after 1k when I first got the kit just to take a look. I was shocked what I found, there was SO MUCH dirt build up inside the blower. I contacted RIPP and they wanted me to forward me to a company that sold another style filter. I ended up putting a dual stage foam w/ a inner cage and calling it good. I have not had the problem since. I even ran an oil analysis to make sure the dirt did not do too much damage. Turns out it was excessive but the new filter brought the number back down. This one doesn't make me happy talking about....
2) I run 91 octane fuel all the time, but there is NO way I can run the "Black Box" on the higher octane setting. I had a bad pinging problem when I would get 3 lbs or more of boost. Turns out the supplied MAP sensor had an issue. I got a new one fast, and was happy. I notice now it still pings a little when I am at a low RPM with a mild load and light throttle, with low to almost no boost at all. It is something I am still trying to track down and figure out......
4)Offroad in LOW range with a Rubi and a 6speed I don't need anymore power below 2500 RPMs because the gears takes care of that. It really acts like its not even there just crawling around idling and I dig that. Its on road where I wish it could just be a little better.
The overall with the kit I would say I am pretty happy with it. I can say that it does take some down shifting sometimes to get the RPM's up to get power. I do say it would be nice to be on a slight hill and just be able to give it some gas and it pulls it up without a downshift (I have a 6speed as well). But the power is there, it is just at higher RPMs...

I always love how involved Ripp gets in discussions on this forum. They are always prompt to deliver some well thought out and easy to follow explanations about their product. I sure hope they are considering making a SC for the wrangler if they drop the Pentastar in there!
