Self Tapping Screws vs Pop Rivets
Hello all!
I recently got my first Jeep, a 2010 Wrangler Rubicon, and I'm looking to add a few mods that require the use of self tapping screws. I personally don't like the idea of creating an opening in the paint for rust to start. I was thinking of using pop rivets instead of the self tapping screws so that I can make the hole, paint over the bare metal, then use the rivets to attach the mods.
Does that all make sense or should I just stick with what the manufacturer gives me?
In case it matters, I'm looking at a fuel door and a mesh grill insert.
Thank you.

You can always apply a clear aerosol coat to the holes which will prevent rust. I did this to my undercarriage after drilling 24 holes for rock sliders. I haven't had a single problem with rust. I will reapply the coat in due time just to be safe.
If you use self tappers just remove them after they have made the hole and paint the bare metal. The same idea you had for the rivits. The only problems I see with rivits is if you had to remove the mod, now your drilling it off. As well you'll need to find the correct length, so it will pull tight but not to tight that it will crack the plastic. What are you gonna do with the hollow part of the rivit ( where the stem is)? Youll have to find steel ones so you don't cause rust to form from the 2 different metals, and they are harder to pull tight.
I think if it was me I'd just use the self tapping screws install mods, remove mods and touch up the holes. For the couple of mods listed that is what I would do, if it was gonna be a 2 day install/removal/install id do it as I went along and if I missed 1 or 2 holes I'd live with it.
