It's a heat shield. Take it off if you want, but it will get hotter in the back, and there might me an issue with the way the heat flows to the gas tank (I don't know one way or the other)

I wanted to add you could get some heat shield tape with adhesive. Looks like tin foil. It will reflect heat. I've wrapped my fuel lines with this.

Ok.....there are 2 types of shields on the exhaust...The shiny ones on the body and there is one on the exhaust pipes were they merge into 1 large pipe. The shield over the 2 pipes is welded with a small compression band on the end. It took me a freaking month to figure out what was rattling when I accelerated. I even took it to the dealership and that was no help.
My wife pumped the gas while I was under the jeep. I placed my hand on the shield and the noise went away..turns out the compression bang on the end of the shield had worked loose. That stupid thing rattle like crazy. Finally knowing what was making all the dam noise I went to the hardware store. Bought a large radiator hose clamp, put it around the end of the shield and the pipes, tightened it down and BOOM! no more noise...

Default Fix for my exhaust shield issue

i checked out this post and first looked to see if shield was close to the muffler, which it wasn't but did notice the four flange nuts that hold the heat shield to the floor, one of them had rusted out around the dia. of the flange. i removed nut and put larger washer between nut and shield and no more noise. thanks your thread made me look a little closer and resolved issue.
