Supposedly by trying really hard. I haven't managed to get mine off but you're supposed to be able to pull really hard ... Think heman.

Others have used a wrench of some type, a rubber mallet and a hand towel.

Hey for anyone that's wondering on the 2011 JK for the 6 speed manual shifter all you have to do is pull very hard to get the shifter knob off, do not remove parts from the stock knob it will not make it easier and you will ruin it altogether! Hope this was of some help

Take an open end wrench and slide it under the shifter then take a hammer and hit the wrench. Watch out though b/c the shifter will fly off and hit you in the head.

This method worked for me and yes I was hit in the head

That works the best and you won't have to punch yourself in the face when it comes off.

I don't mean to get ofF track but does any one else's shifter knob rattle or vibrate? My knob has a rattle slash / vibrate in 3rd gear and didn't know if it would help to take it off and maybe reseat it.

Yeah it doesn't bother me all that much though. Sometimes JB Weld, or find a good epoxy place and get some good stuff to put on there. Tap Plastics?
