Remove them. Having them exposed makes them easy to clean. In winter , I try to clean the whole under belly once a month at least.

I never had any ( M95's) and just hit them with fluid film in the winter and no rust

I removed mine as they filled with water and muck.

They stay cleaner now and might even last longer.
