Default Shovel Mount idea help

I was on the trails the other day and had to use my shovel, i normally carry my military fold up shovel. And while it was nice to have it and help dig myself out, i soon noticed that those small fold up e tool shovels suck if you really have to do some digging. Shoveling out tiny scoops with a midget shovel was no fun at all.

So i decide a t handle mid sized shovel or a full size shovel was needed. I need to put it on the outside of the jeep, as i have a 2 door and every inch of space is needed inside.

So i found two ideas that i liked. First is a simple hood mount. I found this pic online, he simply removed the windshield bumper stops and used those holes to mount two quickfist, bam shovel mount.

Think the the hood is strong enough for this at highway speeds?

the other option is the spare tire. I tried to just bungee it to the tire, but with some good bouncing it started to move. i found this cool piece that a member made:

Which i really like. But i have tried to message him twice now, and no answer for over a week. So looks like he isnt interested in making anymore of them.

Any other options that are cheap that you guys know of? I really dont want to spend $100+ to mount a $10 shovel.

I was just thinking about mounting a shovel somewhere on my two door...

I already have the Ace hood mount for a hi lift jack but Ace just came out with a hi lft mount attachment for their rear bumper/tire carrier...

So I was thinking of moving hi lift to rear carrier and putting slightly longer bolts on the hood mounted hi lift carrier and finding just the right shovel and drilling very careful holes through the shovel's shaft, and then it would fir perfectly on the Ace bracket on my hood

I just need to take some measurements and checkout some shovels and measure those as well

I'm going to also mention to Ace that they make a shovel holder option for their rear tire carrier!

You can buy for a particular application, or in a generic kit with a number of different sizes ...

I mounted mine on my Hi-Lift using the Jeep Swag brackets with Quickfists. You could easily get a longer shovel if you wanted.

The hood is really thin sheetmetal. The commercial solutions that mount a Hi-lift, and/or axes/shovels to the hood do so at the hinges, which are much stronger. A friend of mine, a very skilled fabricator, tried to build a shovel and axe hood mount for his dad's TJ. After fussing with it for a few hours (pictures here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10200332855024917.1073741844.1260697505&typ e=1&l=c6c7d355c9) he came to the conclusion that the $125 or so for the commercial solution was much better--the time to run around town getting steel parts broken and powdercoated, cutting and welding himself, etc (he has very high standards) just wasn't worth it. He gave his dad the Tough Stuff mount for his birthday.

If you decide to mount it to the hood nipple holes, I'd recommend beefing up the sheetmetal on the backside.
