For what it's worth the PDF didn't help any.

This is what I did:

1) remove the thin piece of plastic that comes and covers the side market from the tire (about 2 inches behind the side marker). It's pretty flexible so just pull it out towards you and it should pop-out right under the side marker.

2) Pop-out the rivet (you can do that first if you want) by using a screwdriver that is thinner than the river, and hammering it slowly to loosen it, and then harder to have it pop out. (watch where it goes).

3) Once the rivet is out, you'll just need to get a flashlight and see how everything works, basically you need to get the side marker out by seperating the two pieces of plastic it's sandwitched between (fender and the other one).

This does take two people. The most important is to pop out the rivet, and pulls things open to see how it works. Sorry I have no pics.

I followed these instructions and I got mine out with some effort in about 10 minutes by myself. Just to expand here:

Step 0: Before you do anything, you want to unplug the wiring to the sidemarker. Then Twist the lightbulb and pull it out.

Also, when you are trying to separate the sidemarker from between the two pieces of plastic, use two steps. First, push in the tab at the top, I bent mine and it was ok to be reused. While pushing it in (or, after you have pushed it in enough to be loose), pull down on the sidemarker from where the bulb goes and this will pop it half way out. The sidemarker will now be stuck on the circle cut-out on the inner fender liner. Secondly. pull the front fender with one hand while pulling the inside fender liner with the other hand. Use your fingers on the hand pulling the inner fender to push on the sidemarker where it is still on the circle and it will pop out.

These instructions might make sense after you have looked at it already or after you are done though.

Anyways, Good Luck!

I plan on doing some homemade tint on my markers. Anyone actually successfully remove them ALONE? I am a college student who only has free time late late late at night, when everyones sleeping (due to my job). And I will have to do this by myself with some lighting set up.

Any tips or tricks? The one that makes the most sense for a solo install is the post by Davis.

I struggled with this for 3 hours. I had friends help me. And 2 of them were Jeep mechanics. We just could not get them out at all. The top part comes out, but the bottom part just wouldnt budge. They said in order to service the Jeeps, they had to remove the inner liner to access the lights.

Ended up getting the sidemarkers tinted with rockblocker film (dark dark smoke). I plan on doing the fronts myself with static cling tint (little trick of mine).

Recon has a how-to Video on YouTube that may help. Here's the link:

The key is removing the plastic rivets and reinstalling them. Harbor Freight sells the tool to install new rivets if you need it. The video shows how to reuse the old rivets. Here's the link to Harbor Freight:

The HF tool comes with some plastic rivets that will work. You can also buy them from any Jeep parts suppler.
