Default Smittybuilt src side armor problems

I I tried installing the side armor steps on my 2dr tonight. What a disaster....I don't know if the fitment is different from the 2014s to the 2015 JKs or if the guy that made the steps was blind. They need about an 1/8th of an inch grinded off the mount before they'll fit. Since I don't have a grinder guess I will be taking them to get professionally installed. Not what I was hoping for from a $300 product....

Thats what you SHOULD expect when paying cheaper prices for a product. Now i do have the same steps on my 2 door. My wife decided she wanted to open her car door and hit the rails. The protective coat didnt hold up to that and have chipped through. The steps were not even on for a week before this happen but glad it hit that vs my doors. Now mine were very very easy to install and lined up perfectly. I have heard of guys having the same exact issues though. Try calling smittybilt first before taking them somewhere. They might even send you a free set.

Read the product reviews on amazon. Most of the reviews state the same problem, most just drill it out larger

I will call them and see what's what. I don't really care about a free set. I really just want em on since I bought em to help my wife and kids get in & out. The problem wasn't with the bolt holes but the U shaped cut that slides around the big rubber thing (I'm guessing it's a jacking point?)

It's usually the driver side one that is the prob, front mount , front bolt hole.
Just ream it out, if you take it to a shop their probably going to charge a $100 to put on.
You could buy the tools at HF for cheaper than that .

You nailed it. It's the driver side front mount. I can see and feel where it was rubbing on the rubber for the body mount (jacking point?). It looked like there wasn't an issue with the actual bolt holes. I managed to get the front lined up but then couldn't get the rear mount to line up. But I bet if I drill out the bolt holes on the rear it'll slide right in.

on my set the driver side went up in 15min, passenger side on the other hand, took about 45min, had to grind and what not, not too bad, but now fits like a glove.... lol

Mine was close enough that all I needed was a BFH.

Try twisting the rails as you mount them if you understand what I'm trying to say...Like, try to tweak it so it passes the metal part of the body mount and goes straight to the rubber part.

I know I sound like a SB groupie but I promise both sides on mine went on in under 30 mins. Again, could be a 14 thing but I just tweaked it a bit and it slid right on. I too found that if I just tried to straight put them on, it'd not make it. A little rotating and it went right up there.

It gets caught up on the rubber part of the body that's above the metal part (if that makes sense). Gonna go to the hardware store and pick up a grinder attachment for my drill and try to make the u-shape cut out bigger and the bolt holes bigger. I will try twisting it as well when installing.
