Question So I broke this yesterday

I was offroading when in the middle of nowhere I heard a Snap. I got out and checked my drive shafts becuase that was the first thing to come in mind! but then I found this later on that day.

any Ideas of how easy or hard of a fix this is?
if anyone has a price that would really help too

I don't think warranty will cover it since I have a 4" lift on 37" tires

and here is what the other side looks like

Any responses would be greatly appreciated

thanks in advance

From the looks of that pic, it looks like its going to be more than $50. I looks like you might have bent the outer shaft where the U-joint cap goes in. The thin area looks to be distorted. I would still check with the dealer to see if it would be covered. Its a typical failure that EVERYONE should look for because of the design of the u-joint used on the wrangler. The u-joint Jeep uses has a C-Clip that holds the u-joint cap in the axle shaft and is prone to come off and causes the cap to come out which causes what you see. Easy fix for people that havn't already lost thiers is to spot weld the C-clip to prevent it from coming off.
The cost of you doing the job is going to run you in the ball park of $200. (50 for good joint and $150+ for outer axle shaft). For a shop to do it is will run you around $500 to $700.

From Quadratec a short side shaft (inner/outer/ujoint) is only $160 and the long side is $190.

Try taking it to your dealer they just might cover it
I have 6.5" lift and 37's and my my tierod ends went bad and my dealership
replaced the whole tierod under warranty (bar and all)
It's worth a try

Sure you could have it replaced under warranty if the dealer is cool BUT its going to happen again! Why not buy a CTM and be done with it. I know its more but its money well spent. If the outer is bad due to the ovaling and distorsion of the joint then replace that too with a chromoly or better part. You are running 37's there no reason to go cheap now, right?

How would putting in a CTM make the setup any better without full circle clips? He didn't break the joint. Aftermarkes shafts would be required to get full circle clips.

I would personally try to replace the joint and tack weld the caps on this time. If the yoke ears are too bent to replace the joint, it's time to upgrade. Good luck.

Same thing happened to me two weeks ago, cap came off. Took it to the dealers maintenance shop and it was covered under warranty. It was left front. Am looking a better solution to address this in a long run.

Sorry just read what I posted. Yeah the entire shaft would need to be replaced for the full circle clips.

Tack welds would be a cheap easy fix but what if you break on the trail? Hope you brought a grinder to remove the weld so you can replace the broken u joint.

This is like the ummteenth time I have read a post like this. Those things are the weak link in our drivetrain.

EDIT: I was also thinking but might as well ask, could you have a machine shop clear the ears for full retainers?
