My understanding is they were going to change the design so no grinding would be necessary. That was all before the new ownership however....

But Hey... for those that got in on the $60 shipped deal last December... For the price I didnt mind a little grinding

I dont understand why brand new stuff has to be modified to fit its application.

If I made some bracket and sold it, EVERYONE that paid $$ for it would take for granted that this bracket fits PERFECTLY...

If they can't make covers that fit all different models of D44, why not just make 2 models?????

WTF.
Agreed. I'm thoroughly disappointed.

wow man, every other guy loves the chance to bust out the grinder, but not the JK crowd.

the covers are powder coated, so if you got covers from different batches its going to have a slightly different finish.

Pig, the idea one must take a grinder to a brand new differential cover makes little sense.

What if you had to take a grinder to a set of Spidertrax before you could get them installed?

C'mon...

I think i would go buy a bigger grinder, thats a big axle..

theres plenty of other products that require drilling, grinding and cutting on the Jeep. So grinding a cover doesnt really bother me one bit.

You could always grind the corner of plastic e-locker instead of cover. it really only need about 1/4" of the plastic taken off. Grinding the covers basically just to insure it doesnt hit. Theres guys that have run the covers without any issues. but why take the chance.

I can understand why people can be upset, but its really not that big of deal to worry about it.

Meh, I suppose you're right... including items I've put on my own JK. I can understand, for instance, drilling holes in my frame to mount my ARB rock rails, but I still think a guy should be able to bolt on a diff cover w/o modification.

I would rather grind the cover than risk screwing up the e locker

Wow - drama queens in this thread. They casted it a long time ago. After they had been selling them for awhile to JKs, they realized that some people were having issues with the elocker making contact with the cover and it was shorting it out. I ran with the covers for over a year with no issues. I finally got around to grinding the cover, which took all of 5 minutes to do.

If you look at things from a company's shoes, you'd see its not economical for them to make a specific JK D44 cover. I would imagine they'll just recast it at some point so this isn't an issue, but considering a Rubicon's D44 is such a small minority of the D44 market, I don't blame them one bit.

Edit: To address the OP's initial question, no idea why they are different casts - but it shouldn't make a difference.
