Besides the downtime waiting for your box to be tapped, is there any advantage or disadvantage to using a WTO tapped factory box vs a whole new box from PSC?

Is there any advantage to the PSC box if you don't do hydro assist?

From all the research I've done, bite the bullet and go PSC.
There are several guys in our local club who have done "makeshift" ram assist kits... and eventually gone PSC. From what they report, the feel and operation of the PSC over other "economical" alternatives is plain better. From all the local reporting, the PSC works, out of the box, every time.
I will be going this route in Jan., and am opting to spend the money for PSC up front to avoid headaches and the likelyhood of ending up with PSC later down the road when frustrations have gotten the best of me.

If it is not in the budget right now, I have read where guys in your situation have added sector shaft braces to eliminate the flex, that have seemingly solved the leaking box issue.

Good luck.

On a side note, why should insurance pay a dime?

If you have the time, source a shitty steering box locally and send it to either PSC or WTO. They will rebuild it and port the box for you. PSC is slightly more expensive. If going with WTO they will make you new hydraulic lines for cheap as well.

Then all you need is a steering cooler of your choice, I am going with a 15" derale dual pass heat sink cooler. If you want you can add a reservoir with a filter to increase your fluid capacity some more to keep your oil running cooler and save your stock steering pump from heat.

Then you'll need to get a ram. When running the stock pump you need a 1.5" ram and not the 1.75" ram that PSC sells with their upgraded high volume pump kit. A 6" stroke should work but you'll have to measure your own jeep to be sure.

Look up one of the many DIY threads, there's a lot of info there.

That's pretty much it for DIY hydro. A full PSC kit up here in Canada costs $3K but the DIY kit is $1K.

Good luck

I'll add one thing to this, I ran a 1.5" ram and now run a 1.75" the steering is better off road with the 1.75" but more touchy on the highway. The 1.5" was slightly better on the highway but noticeably less powerful offroad. Definitely get a bigger res and a cooler from the start.

The "Jeep Fund" is tapped right now but I've got no problem spending money on something to get it done correctly the first time. I'd have to know what is involved before I know what I could do myself.

Does pcs sell just the box? Then later down the line I could get their hydro kit?

Interesting. Thank you. I'll take a look. I'm curious to see where all this gets mounted.

Steering box stays in the stock location.

The cooler can be mounted anywhere but the most common places are in front of the rad on the lower rad support or behind the lower front crossmember. Reservoirs can be mounted in the stock location or near the battery depending on what works with you air box setup. PSC has a tech page on their website with detailed instructions of where to mount stuff.

You can also get a new ported steering box and run it without hydro until you are ready.

Did some quick searching and came
Up with this OEM
box from PSC.

http://www.pscmotorsports.com/motors...box-sg682.html

In my mind, this would just replace the box, no hydro or benefit and possibly leave me in the same spot I am down the road. Is this correct or has PSC upgraded the stock box to make this last longer?

I also found this:
http://www.pscmotorsports.com/motors...-gear-box.html

I'm not so sure I can run this box without hydro assist though. I'm thinking my best bet might be to get on the phone with PSC tomorrow and have them explain them.

I will update at some point tomorrow if I get a hold of them. I also plan on calling WTO to ask about their stage 3 kit, which looks rather enticing because of the price difference.
