The Ace bumper and tire carrier that Matthewd5 referenced is really nice and can be found for under $900. It's not the lightest bumper on the market, but it's very solid and has great departure angle.

This was an issue on earlier models but the JK has vastly more structure for the hinge. In fact, several aftermarket carriers use this structure to mount their carrier.

The spot weld failure is a real issue but is also usually brought on by running a higher backspacing wheel the no longer touches the rubber isolators. Since nothing is controlling the "wiggle", It causes the failure.

FWIW, I know two guys that have been running 37s on the stock carrier since 08 & 09' and have yet to have an issue. But they control the "wiggle". One just with Daystar extended bumps, and one has a hitch mounted contraption and extended bumps. On the flip side I've seen spot weeks fail in weeks after running a 34 and not controlling the wiggle.

Also, the gate can be purchased for about $250-$300. Paint should run no more than the same. If someone paid $1500 they got taken.

You could also look at the Teraflex hinge. That what I am running and love it. I think it is good up to a 37" tire.

Me too, although pretty soon you'll hear from the folks complaining that it's too expensive or the one person that had a failure with the old design.

Default im not a expert on tailgate carriers but

i have been trouble free with the OR -FAB carrier one year on my sport and Two years on the rubicon , ( 3 )years and not a squeek or movement ! just saying you dont need to spend a fortune but you do need to get ready to drop some cash or youl buy a door paint job and a tire carrier all at the same time in a moments time when it could have been avoided if you just got one right from the beginning just my op but its honest

Get the Teraflex carrier and mounting kit from Northridge4x4. It comes out to $624.14 shipped after using their discount code "shark tank".

Why not stock bumper and/or no bumper and the Genright tire carrier (aluminum or steel).

This is pictures of the spot welds failing that I already acknowledged is an issue. I asked for pictures of a hinge failure. It's interesting though that there are no shots of if extended isolators were used to control the wiggle or not.

And yes, I know of three local shops that will repaint a JK gate for less than $450 and spray a new one for even less as there is less prep.

I don't think this is overly expensive, but if the shoe fits I think it should be worn. Their earlier carriers did have some failures and they have yet to recall them.

Don't get me wrong, I think running the factory carrier is less than ideal and if you have the coin to replace it you probably should. But I know a lot of guys that are having success running 35s and even some running 37s that haven't had issues.

Maybe more than one, but a couple of stories of cracked welds on an old design gets repeated over and over on several jeep forums and it gets way overblown. A problem that is exacerbated by poor installation.

The internet is a wonderful thing. Now everyone is selling their TF hinge, lol.
