Default Street Tires

1) Please don't slap me around to hard, I have good reason for asking.

2) I found out that my JK with M/T's on it takes about a car length longer to stop then a Toyota Highlander on street tires, 60 to 0, standing on the peddle.

3) I found out that the Rugged Ridge XHD Bumper system with the RRC pre-runner is a beast! Cut the lift gate of the highlander open like a tin can and the powercoat got taken down to metal in 3 spots. My tow points hit the bumper and stopped the carnage but the damage was done.

4) My Jeep is fine.

5) I am thinking about getting some 32" street tires to run on the road for improved traction and gas millage and to save the mudders for the trails. Are there any good recomendations out there for tough looking but good street tires? I'd perfer to buy a US product. Looking for something lighter that will improve dry road traction but still provide good wet and snow traciton. I'll get a set of mudders for the trail.

The new Cooper Zeon LTZ looks damn cool! But a bit $$$$.

Thanks,

Will you be testing your new tires the same way?

You can probably get a great deal on the stock good year SRAs online (i.e. eBay) or maybe some other members here might be selling theirs. I still have them and alternate them with my 33" Mickey Ts...So far they work fine on the road even when the roads are wet...

No, I hope to never test tires this way. I tend to have cars for performance of one form or another. I had sticky rubber on my Grand Marquis and was amazed at what good tires, shocks and breaks will do for a boat like that. I knew the mudders didn't perform good on pavement but was surprises at the disadvantage when the time came. I got caught in a panic stop situation, was paying attention, following safely and got on the breaks as soon as I could. Just ran out of room to stop, I needed about one more car length. Better street tires would have saved me from hitting anyone. I picked the Highlander over the bus full of old folks. (The bus driver caused the situation.) I had lots of time to think about what to hit as we howled to a stop from 60. BANG! At least no one was hurt. And my Jeep is undamaged. I feel bad for he lady I hit. Would have much perfured to have had an out then to have tag her but that's why they are called accidents.

why not just upgrade the brakes? as far as gas mileage goes.... it will take you a long time to make the new tires worth the extra coin.

glad no one was hurt.

the bfg all terrains look good. are still beefy looking... and even do well offroad. but give u a lot more contact. u could even use the for mild wheeling, and only use the mt's for when you thought they would really give u an advantage. much cheaper than the MT's too from what I remember.

Increase your following distance maybe?...

Not to be a smart arse. I have been considering picking up a second set of Jk wheels for street tires too. I just think I would never actually use them.
