Default Swinggate to tailgate conversion?

So I'm thinking about changing the rear door on my 2dr into a tailgate instead. Does anyone have any experience with this? I just need to be able to hang some stuff out the back of it sometimes and this would really help. My spare tire will be moving onto a bumper mount swingout so I don't need to worry about that... Any advice or write-ups would be great. Thanks!

You'll have to do a search, but I remember someone here did that. The hinges didn't look so good though.....kid of cheesy, I think.

Hmmmm... The Swag kit looks alright. Those hinges will usually be hidden by the spare anyway... I'll have to think about it and see if anyone recalls any others. Couldn't find the writeup on that other one.

Do a search for the red JK with the lower forty kit. They have a tailgate and it looks like they used stock hood hinges. Not sure how it all works together.

I can't imagine this mod would be very difficult to fab yourself, make it how you want it. I agree on the swag offroad, it's kinda cheese ball. I would probably design it so the hinges are on the inside.

Is that the kit yall are talkin about? If so, I think it looks like ass. It's probably dangerous, too as there is NO latch on the right side. Make a helluva projectile in an accident.

So are you going to remove the swing out tire carrier every time you need to hang things out the back? You wont be able to drive around with the tire carrier outward. I dont see much gain from doing this...

Yeah, I think it's a cheesy kit too... Was hoping to find something else but had no luck. I think I can do better making it myself. Well, maybe I'll order another tailgate and see if I can fill the holes and make it look stock. I can probably change it to a truck-style handle and latch too. Shouldn't be too hard. At least I'll have a project...
