Im looking to upgrade my winch line. I want to get synthetic line but not sure what to get and who has the best prices? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance .

My vote definitely goes to X-Line. Go to their website (Offroad Only is the company) and see why. It has double the temperature resistance and quite a bit more load capacity as well. Double that up with one of their bling fairleads and your set .

I work on a Heavy Rescue Squad and experienced a failure while training with another squad company (they were using synthetic line on their winch).

To the synthetics defense, the winch was not directly in line with the vehicle being stabilized that was on its side. I was not comfortable with the angle, but they tried it anyway, and it failed. I do not believe the metal winch line would have failed in this situation (this was a small 4 door car)

The nice thing was when it failed, there was not a deadly spring back from the broken line, like you might experience with a traditional winch line.

I know after that I would never be comfortable using a synthetic line during a rescue. They were also quick to switch back to a traditional line!!

The viking winchline has a capacity of almost 20,000 pounds the only way it will fail is from overload or it is cut.

What is the benefit of a synthetic line? Is there any practical purpose or is it to have something different than others?

IMHO the pro's are safety, easy to use , and longevity.

If it breaks it falls to the ground.

You do not need gloves when you are winching, no sharp edges.

It will not kink.

Cons- Cost and it can be cut if you are not careful.

We have been running synthetics for 3-4 years and have not had any issues.

It also floats in water, and imo it spools up easier than cable. Cable tends to not spool up easy, if there is any slack put on the line it will loosen up a lot on the winch.

IMHO, synthetic is the only way to go and so long as you take care not to get it abraided or cut (i.e. use a sleeve or other protector when pulling against rocks), it will out-perform steel rope anyday, is way safer (won't become a projectile if it breaks), it floats, won't rust and won't crush/splinter. And, as Northridge4x4 just mentioned, this is why I'm switching to synth line
