Tail gate door changed to pickup tail gate
that'd be slick, like how the ridgeline door has 2 options of opening. but again, the spare tire issue. where would it go?
I hear ya....see i already tore my gate up wheelin....and don't have my spare on anymore...and i agree it looks like crap
....but if you use an aftermarket tire carrier it would swing away separately. I wouldn't mind getting a rear stinger made like the PSC ones they have for the TJ that folds the spare down too....
...one idea could be with some skillful welding you COULD use one of the gates off of the CJ's and add extension plates...but there you would have to reinforce it pretty good to keep weak points down (otherwise no sitting for my fat ass)...then it would be ONE OF A KIND and still keep the cool JEEP stamp in the middle!
....just some brain stormin....we'll see what the man actually fabricating it would say....may not even be worth it!

...had same idea before, but problems with locating spare tire has held me back so far.
I thought swing up and swing down tire carrier, to swing it before opening rear gate. Also tried to locate my 285/75-16 inside but took up too much useful space. Someone suggested to have my spare to roll behind like a small trailer or really to use a minitrailer but it is not good when going offroad...etc.
So i am waiting better ideas to come up...yet.

A normal after market bumper with tire carrier would work. they swing away then you open the tail gate. You would not be able to drive with the tailgate down, but dont know if that would be a good ideal anyway.
Also, what about instead of taking off the side hinged OEM door, leave this door on but fabricate a piece that is used when the door is open...hinges on the bottom, folds flat in the rear compartment, or can flip over to be the flat tailgate piece? Would be simpler to develop, provide a table or sitting space (depending on it's strength), but would not require mounting the spare somewhere else, nor requiring the $$$$ for a bumper mounted tire carrier. I guess this idea depends on if you want to keep the spare mounted where it is, and what you really want the tailgate piece to be used for.
