Default tailgate hinge upgrade

Just wondering if there is any way to do this to support a bigger heavier tire.

It's not only the hinges but the sheet metal pulling apart at the spot welds and seams.
Best be would be a tire carrier of some sort that takes the weight off of the tailgate.

OR Fabs body mounted carrier is the most economical way to get the weight off your carrier.

All thos other bits are just gaining you a few months of running a spare on the gate. It will still buckle. It will still wallow the hinges. I dont even know how the gimmicks work. Its still the same weight on the hinges and welds...

I couldn't see spending $500 on the OR Fab tire carrier. Geez, for a bit more, you might as well get an entire rear bumper.
I did the Steel plate reinforcements from Quadratec.

The nearest bumper with a tire carrier of the same quality desing and construction as an OR Fab product would be in the 1200$+ range.

This also gives you the opportunity to run whatever rear bumper you want. Why do you have a problem spending 500$ for a top notch carrier on par with LOD and Shrockworks quality?

Agreed!

The OR-Fab carrier is the way to go.

The factory carrier is very thin cast aluminum and cracks at even the slightest pressure. I broke one once when a tire shop over tightened my lug nuts...

Not to mention that the factory tailgate is made out of very thin sheet metal. Try removing your spare tire, and simply take your finger and push in on the bare sheet metal of your tailgate... You will see that it literally only takes a few pounds of force to cause the flat surface to want to deflect.

You need a new carrier. Period. All these other products are stop gaps, but eventually you are going to break something. When that happens, just hope it's the factory carrier and not the tailgate.

Is this a decent option for a 35" tire on stock sahara rim?
